The Brazilian centre-back becomes the most decorated player in French top-flight history.

Marquinhos joined Paris Saint-Germain as a 19-year-old from AS Roma back in the summer of 2013, and this new triumph marks another high point in a career already filled with silverware. Now in his twelfth season at the Parc des Princes, the 29-year-old defender has lifted more domestic titles than any player in Ligue 1 history.

“It’s crazy. I’m so happy,” said Marquinhos post-match, glowing with pride. “What we’ve achieved is a real challenge, something exceptional. This will go down in history.”

The win not only brought PSG their 13th Ligue 1 crown overall, but also served as a confidence boost ahead of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final first leg against Aston Villa. Marquinhos played the full 90 minutes as Luis Enrique’s men controlled proceedings against Alexandre Dujeux’s Angers side.

When asked about the mentality behind PSG’s enduring dominance, Marquinhos pointed to a collective mindset.“It’s in our DNA to give everything. To always play with a philosophy, to fight for the shirt - no matter the opponent, whether it’s the Champions League or Ligue 1,” he explained. “I grew up playing in teams with that DNA, and PSG is exactly the same. It’s great to see the fans happy.”

Learning from the very best

Marquinhos arrived in Paris in the summer of 2013, a shy but determined 19-year-old signed from AS Roma for around €31 million. At the time, he was one of the most expensive teenage defenders in history - seen as one for the future. But he wasted little time in proving his worth. Under Laurent Blanc, he quickly broke into a star-studded squad, playing alongside Thiago Silva and David Luiz, learning from two of Brazil's best.

From 2014 to 2020, Marquinhos became a cornerstone of PSG’s domestic dominance. He collected title after title, becoming known for his consistency, leadership, and ability to play both at centre-back and as a defensive midfielder when needed. During this period, he racked up seven Ligue 1 titles, multiple Coupe de France and Coupe de la Ligue trophies, and grew into a fan favourite.

In 2020, he was handed the captain’s armband following Thiago Silva’s departure to Chelsea. That same year, he led PSG to their first ever UEFA Champions League final, narrowly losing 1–0 to Bayern Munich in Lisbon.

He then became a mainstay in PSG's backline, out-living several managers and formations, from Thomas Tuchel to Mauricio Pochettino, Christophe Galtier, and now Luis Enrique. No matter who came and went, the Brazilian remained indispensable.

Now the Parisians have a new goal in sight—to finish the Ligue 1 season unbeaten, a feat never achieved before in French football. With six games remaining, PSG are tantalisingly close.
