UCL Recap: Liverpool's Late Winner Secures First-Leg Victory Over PSG

Paris Saint-Germain generated scoring chances but couldn't find the back of the net in their 1-0 loss to Liverpool on Wednesday night at the Parc des Princes in the first leg of their UEFA Champions Round of 16 tie.

The first 45 minutes saw PSG be the more dominant team as the Ligue 1 McDonald's club recorded 12 total shots while the Reds only registered one total shot. Despite the difference in total shots, the home side couldn't find the back of the net.

Luis Enrique and his team did score midway through the first half after Khvicha Kvaratskhelia fired off a curling shot into the top-left corner, but the celebration didn't last long as VAR determined that the Georgian was inches offside.

Alisson Becker also played a significant role in the scoreless first half as the Brazilian made four saves to keep PSG off the scoreboard.

In the second half, Alisson continued to be a thorn in the side of the Parisians' attack as he made five saves in the final 45 minutes. Although PSG generated many scoring chances, it was the visitors who opened the scoring in the 87th minute.

Alisson cleared the ball to Darwin Nunez, who won the duel and set up Harvey Elliott, who came off the bench. Elliott calmly slotted it past Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Following the disappointing result against Liverpool, PSG midfielder Vitinha spoke to Canal+ to share his thoughts on the first 90 minutes of the Champions League tie.

"It's tough, everyone saw it. Football is like that. It's tough. They scored with their only shot. It's tough. It's been a long time since we lost. We will have to show our strength. We're going to play a great match there, we'll go through, I'm sure of it... I remain optimistic. We deserved to win. We had plenty of chances, we're going to play a great match and win at Liverpool."

PSG will now need to travel to Anfield next week and overturn the 1-0 result with Liverpool having the home crowd behind them.

The Stat: 23

Despite the loss to Liverpool, Warren ZaĂŻre-Emery returned as he played his 23rd Champions League match, setting a record for the most appearances by a player under 19 in the competition.
