Each Ligue 1 McDonald's season, a few young players emerge with standout performances, and this past weekend, Stade Rennais' Mahamadou Nagida and Toulouse FC's Noah Edjouma made a name for themselves as ones to watch.
Nagida is making the most of his recent opportunities as the teenager has scored two goals in Rennes' last three matches. The left-back scored against AS Monaco while playing 70 minutes, then on Saturday, against Saint-Etienne, Nagida scored despite only playing six minutes.
Kazeem Olaigbe powered past his defender on the left side of the box and squared the ball to Adrien Truffert. Truffert's shot was deflected, but Nagida, who had just come on in the 84th minute, was perfectly positioned at the far post to tap it in, sealing a two-goal lead and the win for Rennes.
The young defender, a product of the Cameroonian academy Ecole de Football Brasseries du Cameroun, moved to Rennes in August 2023 to further develop his football career.
Since making his professional debut for Rennes in November 2023 as a substitute in a 3–0 UEFA Europa League win over Maccabi Haifa, Nagida has slowly established himself as a first-team player.
This season, Nagida has become a vital player for Les Rouge et Noirs, making 12 appearances in Ligue 1 McDonald's and playing 426 total minutes.
Joining Nagida as a young standout who is taking advantage of his recent opportunities is Edjouma. In his Ligue 1 McDonald's debut the 19-year-old scored in Toulouse's thrilling draw against AJ Auxerre on Sunday.
Edjouma, who has been with Les Violets' since 2013, played 21 minutes off the bench and took advantage of a cross from Shavy Babicka on the right to score the equalizer. Speaking to the media after the match, the Toulouse academy product revealed that it was a moment that he had dreamt of his entire life.
"I just had to put it in the back of the net, stay focused, and not assume it was already a goal. At the moment, I didn’t fully realize it, even though I celebrated. Then it all settled, and we had to focus on holding onto the score."
"It was important. Personally, it felt magical! I’ve imagined these first moments in Ligue 1 for a long time. It’s the result of hard work. I’m very spiritual, and I believe everything happens for a reason. I’m just really happy."
Toulouse handed Edjouma a professional contract in 2023 when he was just 17. The next year, he made his professional debut for the club in a Coupe de France Round of 64 match against Chambéry SF, coming on as an 82nd-minute substitute in a 3–0 victory.
Even though he’s living the dream by making his debut for his boyhood club and scoring in France's top flight, Edjouma highlighted the challenges he's faced to get there, especially the physical demands of playing in Ligue 1 McDonald's.
"Up until now, my journey has been really tough. I didn’t always have the physical condition needed to play in Ligue 1. But I kept fighting, worked twice as hard, and now it’s paying off."
"I’m primarily a right winger, left-footed, and I can play all three attacking positions, but growing up, I mostly played on the right. Now, I just want to get as much playing time as I can and win as many matches as possible."
Nagida and Edjouma are teenagers working to make their mark as first-team players, and they have the potential to be part of the next wave of rising talents, so keep an eye on them.
