It was a scoreless first half between Marseille and Angers as the visitors were the dominant side, recording six total shots while the home team registered one. Despite the shot production from OM, they couldn't break the scoreless deadlock.
Roberto De Zerbi and his team found their scoring boots in the final 45 minutes, though, opening the scoring in the 69th minute courtesy of a goal from Adrien Rabiot.
OM had been winning corner after corner, and it finally paid off midway through the second half. Rabiot met a Gouiri corner at the near post and beat Yahia Fofana with a well-placed header to make it 1-0.
In the 75th minute, OM doubled the lead with Neal Maupay's goal. Pierre-Emile HĂžjbjerg delivered a precise through ball to Maupay, who flicked it towards Gouiri with the tip of his foot. Gouiri then laid it back to Maupay, who slotted it home with the inside of his foot, guiding the ball through Fofana's legs.
After the match, Rabiot spoke to DAZN and spotlighted the impressive form the squad is experiencing after winning two straight matches and weathering a recent three-match winless streak.
"We've been doing well lately. The new signings have made a difference over the last couple of games. Neal has a great attitude, and when he comes on, he adds something. The recruits are really doing their part. Ismael is a skilled player, and he's got the right mentality. That's exactly what we needed in the team. It's good for OM."
Following their win over RC Strasbourg in the Coupe de France Round of 16, Angers struggled to build on that momentum. Pierrick Capelle spoke to DAZN, acknowledging that advancing in the domestic cup had taken a lot of energy from the team.
"It's our third match in a week, and we put a lot of energy into the Strasbourg game. We always need to learn from matches like these. It's tough to endure that much pressure throughout a game. The frustration comes from the set piece. But we stay true to our values and won't give up."
Rabiot has been decisive in seven of his last 10 official matches with Marseille (five goals, two assists) following his goal against Angers.
