UCL Recap: Liverpool Snap Lille's 21 Match Unbeaten Streak

LOSC Lille fought hard but lost 2-1 to Liverpool on Matchday 7 of the UEFA Champions League group stage on Tuesday night at Anfield.

In the first half, Lille conceded five total shots to Liverpool as the home side opened the scoring in the 34th minute courtesy of a goal from Mohamed Salah.

The veteran scored on a left-footed shot from outside the box to the top left corner off an ass from Curtis Jones with a through ball following a fast break. Salah's goal allowed the Premier League club to head into halftime with a 1-0 advantage over Les Dogues.

Bruno Génésio and his team were down 1-0 and have another hurdle to overcome after Aïssa Mandi received a second yellow card, earning him a red card and leaving Lille with ten men for the remainder of the match.

Despite having one less man out on the pitch, Lille leveled the scoring thanks to a goal from Jonathan David. The Canadian scored on a left-footed shot from the center of the box to level the scoring 1-1.

Lille's efforts would fall short as Liverpool took a 2-1 lead off a goal from Harvey Elliott on a left-footed shot from outside the box to the bottom right corner following a corner. The visitors couldn't overcome the deficit again and fell to Arne Solt and his team in a tightly contested match.

After the match, Lille goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier spoke to Canal+ and praised his team's efforts, acknowledging that they were up against the Premier League leaders.

"We're proud because it's the end of a streak, but we showed some great things on the pitch. We lacked a bit of ambition in some of our attacks. We came up against a very strong team that made the most of our mistakes. This is top-level football. Losing 2-1 away is never a good feeling."

"The stadiums are amazing; we played Aston Villa last year. The Premier League is a top league, and it’s something everyone dreams of. Salah is incredibly fast, and you never know what he's going to do. We try to stay on our toes and react. It’s been a great experience."

The Stat: Lille's impressive unbeaten streak ends

The loss to Liverpool meant that Lille suffered their first official loss since September 17, 2024, against Sporting Lisbon, ending a run of 21 unbeaten matches.
