Recap: Cherki’s Two Goal Contributions Help OL Defeat Angers

Olympique Lyonnais secured an impressive 3-0 road win on Saturday night over Angers SCO at Stade Raymond Kopa thanks to a goal and assist from Rayan Cherki.

In the first half, Lyon recorded ten total shots while the home side recorded three total shots. Midway through the first half, Cherki recorded an assist on the goal scored by Nicolás Tagliafico in the 26th minute for OL to take a 1-0 lead.

Les Gones took a 1-0 heading into halftime and OL would add to their advantage in the final 45 minutes. After recording an assist in the first half, Cherki scored in the 55th minute to give Pierre Sage and his team a 2-0 lead.

Georges Mikautadze came off the bench in the second half and added the third Lyon goal in the 88th minute as the visitors secured a 3-0 win and left with all three points. OL now trail LOSC Lille by one point for a UEFA Champions League spot for next season.

After the match, Sage spoke to the media at his press conference and shared his thoughts on the squad's mindset not to let Angers have any confidence and score two second half goals to put the match away.

"The players took care of that aspect. They absolutely wanted to kill off the game as quickly as possible. On my side, I was really focused on the aspect I just mentioned, as the idea is to keep progressing in our play, in order to impact our opponents even more and make it increasingly difficult to play against us."

The loss is a setback for Angers, whose recent good form allowed them to climb out the direct relegation form. If FC Nantes secure a win over Stade Rennais on Sunday, Les Canaris can leap over Alexandre Dujeux and his team.

The Stat: OL set record from goals off the bench

Lyon has scored 15 goals thanks to its substitute players in Ligue 1 in 2024, more than any other club during this period in the top flight and this also marks a record in the club's history.
