Breel Embolo sealed Monaco's win with a goal off the bench

After a frustrating run of form, with losses against Benfica in the UEFA Champions League and Olympique de Marseille in Ligue 1 McDonald's, AS Monaco got back to winning ways on Saturday afternoon at home against Toulouse FC. The hosts beat Les Violets, 2-0, with second-half goals from Wilfried Singo and Breel Embolo.

Saved by the post

Toulouse came into the match with four wins from five in Ligue 1 McDonald's, and Carlés Martínez Novell's side had conceded to just one team in that span, Paris Saint-Germain, making them a tough ask for Adi Hütter's side, who no doubt had one eye on a crucial match against Arsenal in the Champions League in the week. However, if the Monégasques were looking ahead, they scarcely showed it, as they thoroughly dominated the first half, led by teenage striker George Ilenikhena

The Nigerian was handed a rare start in Ligue 1 with Folarin Balogun unavailable through injury, and made a nuisance of himself from the off. After a tetchy start to the match, he hit the post on a one-on-one against Toulouse 'keeper Guillaume Restes, before Maghnes Akliouche spurned a pair of chances. Ilenikhena would then hit the bar just before the interval, but halftime would come with neither side having found the net.

Singo makes the difference

Monaco had failed to score in the first half, but didn't take long into the second to find the net, as Singo headed his side in front from Lamine Camara's set piece. From there, the intensity of the match dropped somewhat, and Radoslaw Majecki had to be sharp to keep out Gabriel Suazo. The Principality side would eventually seal the match ten minutes from time, though, as Embolo sealed the result with a clever lob.

Now back in second place, Monaco will face Arsenal on Wednesday before traveling to Reims Saturday week. Toulouse, meanwhile, will host relegation-threatened Saint-Étienne before both sides kick off their Coupe de France campaigns in a fortnight.

The stat

Wilfried Singo is the 13th different player to have scored in Ligue 1 McDonald's for AS Monaco this season -- a higher number than any other side in Europe's top five leagues.
