Recap: Andrés Gómez Hero for Rennes in Win vs. Le Havre

Stade Rennais secured a tightly contested 1-0 victory over Le Havre on Friday night at Roazhon Park as the result also allowed Rennes to snap a four-match winless streak.

In the first half, the home side generated 12 total shots but couldn’t find the back of the net as the two sides went into halftime scoreless draw. Rennes generated eight total shots in the second half and broke the scoreless deadlock courtesy of Andrés Gómez, who scored in the 54th minute.

Le Havre would have a better second half offensively, recording four total shots, which was an improvement from the performance in the first 45 minutes when Didier Digard and his team recorded one total shot. Still, their efforts weren’t enough as Rennes secured the home win and all three wins.

Following the win, Ludovic Blas spoke to Rennes’ official social media accounts and gave his analysis of the contest.

“It’s true—these matches are tough and not our best. But in times like these, when things are difficult, you’ve got to take a breath and be happy with the result. Playing against such a low block is challenging, especially when they have five at the back. They were clearly waiting for us, and we should’ve been more dangerous in the final third."

"We created chances, I had some too, but things just didn’t go my way tonight. Still, like I said, in these moments where you have to dig in, we’ll gladly take the three points. Winning this way feels good because we’ve played well in other games but couldn’t get the win, ending up with draws or losses. So, to play just okay and still win—it’s something we’re happy about."

Le Club Doyen are now on a six-match winless streak, and if either Montpellier or Angers SCO, or both, win their matches this weekend, Le Havre could face more trouble, dropping into the relegation zone.

On the other side, Rennes have put themselves within striking distance of the UEFA Europa Conference League position as they trail Stade de Reims by three points. If Julien Stéphan and his team can begin an unbeaten run then they'll be in the tight race for these European spots for next season.
