It was the reigning Copa América and FIFA World Cup champions who opened up the tournament against the Canadians. For Argentina, former Paris Saint-Germain stars Ángel Di María, Leandro Paredes, and Lionel Messi were in the starting 11 for manager Lionel Scaloni. As for Canada, LOSC Lille's Jonathan David featured in their starting lineup.
Following a scoreless first half, Argentina scored in the 49th minute courtesy of a goal from Manchester City's Julián Álvarez. In the 88th minute, Messi provided the assist on Lautaro Martínez's goal to seal the victory. Lille's David played all 90 minutes for the Canadians but didn't have a shot on target in the loss.
Other players that have a connection to Ligue 1 that featured in this match off the bench are Olympique Lyonnais' Nicolás Tagliafico and former PSG standout Giovani Lo Celso.
Chile 0-0 Peru
La Roja had two players with connections to France's top flight in their starting 11 as manager Ricardo Gareca went with former Olympique de Marseille standout Alexis Sánchez and Toulouse FC defender Gabriel Suazo. As for Peru, they had no player make an appearance with a connection to Ligue 1.
Chile had the most total shots among the two teams, as they registered 11 but only had one on target. On the other side, Peru only recorded seven total shots in the contest but had four on target. Neither side could break the scoreless draw as both teams leave with one point after Matchday 1.
