Mezian Mesloub (RC Lens) is the youngest player to have started a McDonald's Ligue 1 match this season.

Year after year, Ligue 1 McDonald's proves its ability to reinvent itself by introducing the football world to new gems. The 2026/27 season is no exception, with some promising talents already emerging during the first five matchdays. Which clubs have given young players free rein, and who are the discoveries of the start of the season? Here's a quick overview.

AN ALL-FRENCH PODIUM IN THE EUROPEAN TOP 5

Three clubs stand out in Ligue 1 McDonald's, and these same three clubs also hold the top three spots for youngest squads across Europe's five major leagues. With an average age of 22 years and 53 days, RC Strasbourg Alsace is once again at the top when it comes to the youthfulness of its team. The Alsatians are ahead of Toulouse FC (23 years, 74 days) and AJ Auxerre (24 years, 54 days), the only two other clubs with an average age under 25 in the French championship.

Among the clubs at the top of the table after five matchdays, OL (25 years, 337 days) and AS Monaco (26 years, 21 days) are also among the youngest squads in France, as is PSG (25 years, 355 days). Conversely, Stade Rennais (27 years, 281 days) and Paris FC (28 years, 26 days) place more trust in experience. Only OM has a higher average age this season in Ligue 1 McDonald's (28 years, 30 days). But the Marseille club is not among the ten highest average ages in the European Top 5, where Rayo Vallecano is unmatched (29 years, 319 days).

MEZIAN MESLOUB LEADS THE "BABY CLASS"

Another striking point is that French clubs never hesitate to give very young players a chance. Among the 20 youngest starters this season in Europe's five major leagues, 10 play in the French championship, which is half. Special mention goes to Lens's new gem Mezian Mesloub, who made his Ligue 1 McDonald's debut on matchday 5 away at Monaco, at just 16 years and 314 days old. He is outdone by only one player in Europe, Atlético de Madrid's Spaniard Jorge Dominguez (16 years, 241 days).

THE 10 YOUNGEST STARTERS OF THE SEASON IN LIGUE 1 MC DONALD'S

Mezian Mesloub (RC Lens) : 16 years old and 314 days (2nd in the European Top 5)

STRASBOURG AHEAD IN EVERY CATEGORY

With 24 starts by players under 21 since the beginning of the season, or 44% of its total, RC Strasbourg Alsace is the Top 5 European club that has put the most trust in its very young players. Toulouse FC comes second with 20 starts by U21 players (36%), as does FC Barcelona (26%). OGC Nice also ranks among the top ten in this category (8th), with 11 starts by players under 21 (20%).

In terms of playing time, the gap is also clear: RSCA gave 2,050 minutes to its U21 players, such as Gessime Yassine (20), Genesis Antwi (19), Diogo Sousa (20), and Jacobo Ortega (20).

Here again, "Téfécé" takes second place in Europe, but this time the purple-and-white side finishes ahead of Barça, with 1,836 minutes compared to 1,739. Heavily used by Jens Berthel Askou, Christ Tapé (20), Thomas Jorgensen (20), and Ilyas Azizi (18) have had the chance to show their qualities.

The third and last French side to have given more than 1,000 minutes to its U21 players this season (1,018), OGC Nice is seventh in the European Top 5, just ahead of Borussia Dortmund (1,016). Note that BvB is the eighth and final club to have given more than 1,000 minutes to U21 players in the five major European leagues. At "the Gym," it is the promising Junior Mandza and Djibril Coulibaly, both 17, who have taken most of Nice's minutes.

As with average ages, Paris FC and OM are the two Ligue 1 McDonald's clubs that have given the least playing time to their youngest players. With Rudy Matondo, Patrick Zabi, and Omar Sissoko, the capital club has given only 204 minutes to U21 players. For the Marseille side, the figure drops to 147 minutes with Keyliane Abdallah, Tadjidine Mmadi, and Kelyann Bezahaf.

Logically, Strasbourg and Toulouse are the two clubs that have used the most different U21 players. They share the lead across Europe's five major leagues, with 9 players used since the start of the season. They are ahead of a trio made up of Borussia Dortmund, Eintracht Frankfurt, and AS Monaco (7 U21 players).

Here again, Ligue 1 McDonald's is very well represented, with 7 clubs among the top 17 places.
