As Paris Saint-Germain and Stade Rennais prepare to face off in the opening matchday of the 2026/27 Ligue 1 McDonald's season, we look back on five memorable games between the pair.
This result was perhaps one of the great surprises. Rennes weren't exactly in their best shape going into this game. A poor start to the calendar year had just cost Habib Beye his job at Roazhon Park. As a result, the Breton club welcomed the reigning Ligue 1 McDonald's and European champions with an interim manager, Sébastien Tambouret, at the helm.

On the face of it, it looked to be an easy three points for Luis Enrique's side. The reality could not have been more different. Rennes were dominant. Mousa Al-Taamari opened the scoring before their lead was doubled by Esteban Lepaul, who would finish the season as the Top Scoreur in Ligue 1 McDonald's. Whilst former Rennais Ousmane Dembélé would pull one back for PSG, Breel Embolo would restore the two-goal cushion and ensure a memorable victory. One of the best meetings between these two sides, it was also a strong contender for game of the season in Ligue 1 McDonald's last season.
That game couldn't have been more different than the game just a couple of months earlier at the Parc des Princes. This was a sublime attacking spectacle from the champions. It was essentially a B-team from PSG, too. But it was one of their big stars who was decisive: Khvicha Kvarstskhelia. The Georgian netted a brace. There were also goals from Ibrahim Mbaye, Senny Mayulu, and Goncalo Ramos, with PSG working at their free-flowing best.
Another shock, especially considering the state of the game itself. When PSG are two goals up in a final, you certainly wouldn't expect them to cede that advantage. But that is exactly what they did in the Coupe de France final in 2019.
Dani Alves netted the opener and then by the 21st minute, Les Parisiens were 2-0 up thanks to a Neymar goal. But Rennes would get one back before the break through a Presnel Kimpembe own goal and Mexer would draw the Bretons level just after the hour mark. Then followed an incredible, high-quality penalty shootout. It was academy product Christopher Nkunku who missed the decisive penalty at the end of one of the most memorable Coupe de France finals of recent times.
That win in the final was revenge for what happened a year earlier in the same competition. This time, the pair met in the fifth round of the competition. It couldn't have been a more comprehensive victory for PSG.
Les Parisiens' attackers ran riot here. Kylian Mbappé opened the scoring, Neymar doubled it, Angel Di Maria added a third and it was the same trio who got the rest, albeit not in the same order, as they all ended the game with braces.
Continuing the tradition of great cup ties between these two teams. This is one that warmed up nicely in the semi-finals of the Coupe de la Ligue. It looked to be an easy day at the office for PSG, who opened the scoring through Thomas Meunier. Marquinhos added a second after half-time and Giovani Lo Celso a third. Then came the comeback to get PSG's nerves jangling. Diafra Sakho reduced the deficit to two in the 85th minute and then Sanjin Prcic got Rennes within one. A nervy finish for PSG, but they hold on.
