Moise Bombito hit the ground running at OGC Nice before being struck down by injuries. Having competed with Canada at the FIFA World Cup, he will now look to be a key player under Olivier Pantaloni this season.
Bombito joined Nice from Colorado Rapids back in 2024. Largely unknown to the European audience, he nonetheless arrived with strong references. A defender who arrived in the professional game relatively late, his aerial presence and speed made him hot property in the MLS and it wasn't long before he caught the eyes of European scouts.
His opening months on the Côte d'Azur were an unequivocal success. He found his place in the Nice defence, solidifying himself as a first-choice pick and then did the same at international level. He was lavished with praise by Canada manager Jesse Marsch, who said that Bombito's "talent" made him "among the best in the world" at centre- back.

But a dazzling debut campaign would be followed by a much more disappointing second act. The Canadian missed the start of the season due to a shin injury. He came back at the end of September but lasted just two games before missing the rest of the campaign due to a horror leg-break, suffered against local rivals AS Monaco.
It is an injury that left Bombito in a race against time. He sought to return before the end of the Ligue 1 McDonald's campaign in order to help his club stave off relegation. He lost that battle and his place in Canada's World Cup squad was in question.
However, it is telling of Marsch's trust and estimation of the player that Bombito made the squad, despite having played just two games all season and having played no minutes since October. Right until the final moments, there were doubts about Bombito's fitness, but he would go on to play a significant role, starting in the knock-out victory over South Africa and then playing the full 90 minutes as the host nation were knocked out by Morocco.
His performances, however, showed promise. And Nice are relying on him this season. The loss of club captain Dante cannot be underestimated at Nice. Bombito, in part, will have to help fill the void left by the legendary Brazilian.
The injury problems, he hopes, will be in the past. With a full pre-season under his belt, he will feel like a new signing, and that is good news for Nice, whose financial situation has prevented them from making significant moves in the transfer window.
Mohamed Abdelmonem and Youssouf Ndayishimiye also missed large chunks of last season due to ACL injuries sustained at the end of the previous campaign. With Olivier Pantaloni set to go with a back three, it is unclear who will start. All three aforementioned players have a point to prove and lost time to make up for, but there can be little doubt that Bombito will be a central figure, fitness permitting. The revenant defender will want to live up to Marsch's high praise.
