Saturday: A busy day of action
Angers SCO 2-1 FC Lorient
A quickfire double from veteran Jim Allevinah helped Angers edge fellow top-flight side Lorient in a match played in the Lorient suburb of Inzinzac-Lochrist.
AJ Auxerre 1-1 ESTAC Troyes
Veteran forward Renaud Ripart scored midway through the second half to help the promoted side draw with the Burgundians, who had opened the scoring through teenage midfielder Lamfia Dioubaté.
Paris Saint-Germain 1-1 Manchester United
The Ligue 1 McDonald's champions were held in Gotherburg, Sweden, despite Ibrahima Mbaye opening the scoring with just two minutes on the clock.
LOSC 2-2 Hamburg
In an extended match played in Germany, Les Dogues picked up goals from Haakon Haraldsson on five minutes and Soriba Diaoune on 127 minutes to earn a draw against HSV
RC Lens 0-2 Sunderland
Facing another European-level opponent at home, Les Sang et Or fell to the Black Cats 2-0, conceding a pair of second-half goals.
Stade Rennais 2-4 Brentford
Despite goals from Valentin Rongier and Sebastian Szymański, Rennes struggled to get a foothold against a Brentford side featuring former RC Lens midfielder Mamadou Sangaré.
In other matches, in Cagliari, Nice played out a scoreless draw against their Serie A opposition, but lost on penalties. Finally, in Oviedo, Le Havre were edged by the hosts, 3-2 in a thrilling encounter.
Sunday: Marseille edge Athletic Club
Sunday was a less busy day of action, with Olympique de Marseille taking on Athletic Club Bilbao the headline match. Despite missing several key players owing to the World Cup and transfer speculation, Bruno Génésio's club impressed against the Basque side, winning 3-1 with goals from Igor Paixão, Angel Gomes and academy product Tadjidine Mmadi. AS Monaco were also in action, beating Liverpool 3-2 at Anfield.
