There was always something different about Nabil Fekir. Strong enough to shrug off defenders, skilful enough to dance past them and blessed with a left foot capable of deciding matches in a split second, the Lyon academy graduate became one of Ligue 1's defining players of the 2010s. As he celebrates his birthday, we look back on the remarkable career of one of French football's most gifted playmakers.

A World Cup winner with France, a Ligue 1 Young Player of the Year and one of Olympique Lyonnais' greatest academy graduates, Nabil Fekir celebrates his birthday today. With 69 goals and 46 assists in 193 Ligue 1 appearances, the former OL captain left an indelible mark on the French top flight before embarking on a successful new chapter in Spain.

Born in Lyon on July 18, 1993, Fekir's rise to the top was anything but straightforward. Released by Olympique Lyonnais as a youngster before returning to the club via local side Saint-Priest, the attacking midfielder fought his way back into the academy before making his professional debut in 2013.

It did not take long for his talent to become impossible to ignore. The 2014/15 campaign proved to be his breakthrough. Forming a devastating partnership with Alexandre Lacazette, Fekir helped lead Lyon into an unexpected Ligue 1 title race, finishing the season with 13 league goals and nine assists as OL ended the campaign as runners-up to Paris Saint-Germain. His performances earned him the UNFP Ligue 1 Young Player of the Year award and a first senior call-up to Didier Deschamps' France squad.

Although a serious knee injury suffered on international duty in September 2015 threatened to derail his progress, Fekir returned with the same confidence and creativity that had made him one of the league's brightest stars. Blessed with exceptional close control, remarkable balance and a powerful left foot, he developed into the creative heartbeat of his hometown club.

Across seven Ligue 1 seasons, Fekir amassed 193 appearances, scoring 69 goals and providing 46 assists. Only a handful of attacking midfielders have matched those numbers over the past decade, but statistics tell only part of the story.

Whether drifting between the lines, turning away from defenders under pressure or unleashing one of his trademark strikes from distance, Fekir became one of the competition's most entertaining players. His ability to combine strength with technical brilliance made him uniquely difficult to stop, while his flair ensured he was a favourite among supporters far beyond Lyon.

Derby immortality for Lyon

One moment, however, stands above almost every other. In November 2017, after scoring Lyon's fifth goal in a 5-0 Derby Rhône-Alpes victory over Saint-Étienne, Fekir famously held his shirt aloft in front of the home supporters. The image immediately became one of the defining moments of modern Ligue 1 history, symbolising both the intensity of one of French football's fiercest rivalries and the passion with which Fekir represented his hometown club.

European competition provided more memorable nights. In September 2018, Fekir inspired Lyon to a famous 2-1 UEFA Champions League victory away to Manchester City, scoring one goal and producing a performance that reminded the continent why he had long been regarded as one of France's finest attacking talents.

That same year also brought the greatest honour in football. Included in Didier Deschamps' squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, Fekir became a world champion as Les Bleus lifted the trophy in Russia, joining an exclusive group of Ligue 1 players to reach the pinnacle of the international game.

Following more than 200 appearances in all competitions for Olympique Lyonnais, Fekir departed in 2019 to join Real Betis. The move to Spain opened another successful chapter, culminating in Copa del Rey glory in 2022 as he continued to showcase the creativity, intelligence and technical quality that had made him one of Ligue 1's standout performers.

Today, Fekir remains one of the defining players of his generation in the French top flight. A Lyon academy graduate, club captain, World Cup winner and one of the most naturally gifted footballers to grace Ligue 1 over the past decade, his legacy stretches far beyond goals and assists.

Happy birthday, Nabil Fekir!
