RC Strasbourg Alsace have confirmed the appointment of Hugo Oliveira as manager. Who is he?
Despite being just 47, Oliveira has been in coaching for some 23 years, accruing a breadth of experience in different countries and in different roles. He began back in 2003 and as a goalkeeping coach in his native Portugal. Having begun with Paredes' U19 side, he would go on to perform the same function at Rebordosa and FC Marco.
Goalkeepers, as a result, are an important part of his system. "My goalkeeper will play a crucial role in our style of football. He is effectively an 11th outfield player. He is our is first striker, just as our striker is our first defender," said Oliveira upon his unveiling, highlighting their importance. He would have an experience as an assistant manager with Gil Vicente before returning to his goalkeeper coach role, firstly with the Portugal national team and then with Portuguese giants Benfica.
Having had a range of experiences in his native Portugal, he would spread his wings and make the move to England. He would accompany his compatriot, Marco Silva, recently named manager of Benfica. He would start at Hull City back in 2017, as an assistant, before then following Silva to Watford, then Everton, and then, finally, Fulham.
Having spent over 250 games as an assistant to Silva across four clubs in England, Oliveira would get his first shot as a first-team manager back in 2024, with Famalicao. Having arrived midway through the 2024/25 season, he really found his feet in the following campaign.

He led Famalicao to a fifth-place finish in the Liga Portugal. It made his side the best of the rest, behind the powerhouses: Porto, Sporting CP, Benfica, and Braga.
Oliveira's performance as manager of Famalicao caught the eyes of Strasbourg, in the market for a replacement for Gary O'Neil, who left for Ipswich Town earlier in the summer.
Results are part of the attraction, as is his distinct tactical philosophy. With a preference for a 4-3-3, he wants his side to "dominate matches at all times." He added, "Tactics should allow us to control our emotions and dictate the game. We must win the ball back as quickly as possible because, in modern football, transitions are the most important phases of the game."
A young, ambitious manager, his profile also suits what BlueCo are seeking to build at the Meinau. His ability to speak four languages (Portuguese, Spanish, English, and French) only built the attraction.
Impressively, despite never working in France, he conducted his first interview, with the club's channels, in French. Signing a three-year deal, Oliveira, a journeyman coach who started early, says that he now wants to "build something for the long-term".

He added, "I felt that I was the missing piece of the puzzle". Having enjoyed success in what is still a young and burgeoning career at the elite level, he isn't lacking in confidence.
