Doué and Barcola in France training

For France as for Paris Saint-Germain, Bradley Barcola and Désiré Doué are inseparable, locked in competition.

Symbols of a switch

Both Doué and Barcola were symbols of the shifting strategy at PSG. Since the arrival of Luís Campos, Les Parisiens have looked in their backyard a little more. Rather than looking overseas for the biggest stars, there was a focus on recruiting the brightest young talents inside France. Barcola and Doué embody that shift, the former joining from Lyon and the latter from Rennes.

They are vastly different players, despite playing in the same positions. Barcola is direct, dynamic, and thrives in open spaces. Whilst Doué has an excellent burst of acceleration, he is someone who can thrive when given no space at all.

Invariably, one of them misses out for PSG. The reigning European champions have four world-class options in attack for just three places. Ballon d'Or winner Ousmane Dembélé is undroppable, whilst Khvicha Kvaratskhelia is certainly a man for the big occasion and often starts, especially in the big games in Ligue 1 McDonald's and on nights under the lights in the Champions League.

It is a situation that pits Barcola directly against Doué. The pair share minutes. The former played 49 times in all competitions last season, including 29 times in Ligue 1 McDonald's (21 starts). Doué, meanwhile, made 41 appearances last season, which was disrupted by injury issues. He started 16 times in Ligue 1 McDonald's and put up 24 goal contributions across all competitions (13 goals, 11 assists).

And just as Luis Enrique has club level, Didier Deschamps has flitted between the pair, largely due to the different scenarios that Les Bleus have faced so far in the World Cup.

It was Doué who started the opener against Senegal (3-1). For the second game, against Iraq, it was Barcola who started, with Doué coming off the bench in the second half (3-0). Then, once again, it was Doué's turn to impress, and he did, starting and scoring in a 4-1 win over Norway.

Doué and Barcola - horses for courses

Since the World Cup has entered the knockout phase, it is Barcola who has had the upper hand. Deschamps was vindicated in his choice when he started the former OL winger, who then scored in a 3-0 win over Sweden.

That ensured that he started the next game, against Paraguay, but the conditions were not as ripe for him to thrive. Against a stubborn, compact low-block, Barcola did not have the space that he needed to thrive. He was ineffective and subsequently replaced by Doué on the hour mark. The former Rennais was the one to make the difference this time around, coming off the bench and earning the penalty, converted by Kylian Mbappé as Les Bleus edged past their South American opposition (1-0). Horses for courses; Doué and Barcola give Luis Enrique and Deschamps different options, making both teams formidable opponents.
