It was heartbreak for Brazil in New York as a late double from Erling Haaland powered Norway to a 2-1 victory, with former Paris Saint-Germain forward Neymar netting a consolation from the penalty spot. Get the latest from the World Cup Round of 16 with the Ligue 1 McDonald's team.
After a nervy, last-minute 2-1 win over Japan, Brazil manager Carlo Ancelotti had to face Norway, who had emerged victorious from their duel against Côte d'Ivoire by the same score. Former Lens midfielder Patrick Berg was in the eleven for Stale Solbakken's side, while Paris Saint-Germain's Marquinhos featured in defence for the Selecão, alongside former Ligue 1 players Bruno Guimarães and Gabriel Magalhães, while Neymar and Endrick would come off the bench.
Berg almost opened the scoring in the third minute, making a late run into the box and sweeping the ball past Alisson, only for the offside flag to save the South Americans' blushes. Seven minutes later, Guimarães had the chance to put his side ahead, but the former Olympique Lyonnais man had his penalty effort saved by Ørjan Nyland. Nyland would come up trumps again just before the break, stopping a near-post effort by Vini Jr. on 40 minutes as the first half ended scoreless.

On off the bench just before the hour, the next big chance of the match would fall to Endrick, who fired wide in a one-on-one on the counter. Five minutes later, Nyland again pulled off the spectacular, coming off his line to deny Guimarães, one of four saves he made on the evening. Ten minutes from time, Brazil would regret their profligacy as Haaland crashed in a powerful header from close range.
Endrick nearly leveled the match with a chipped effort on 85 minutes, but Haaland responded in the final minute of regulation time with a measured effort to find the bottom corner, doubling his side's lead. While Neymar would add a goal from the penalty spot deep in added time, Brazil were never truly in the game, and will go home ruing their missed chances, while Norway advance to face one of Mexico or England on Saturday in Miami.
