Julio Enciso and Paraguay will hope to play in the Round of 32 of the World Cup after a draw with Australia

In Group D of the World Cup, Turkey stunned the host United States with a stoppage time goal, and Paraguay and Australia played out a mutually beneficial scoreless draw.

United States 2-3 Turkey

In Los Angeles, a much-changed United States side, which started both Tim Weah (Marseille) and Mark McKenzie (Toulouse), were stunned late on by Turkey, who scored in the sixth minute of added time in the second half. Looking to impress in front of the home crowd, the US were quickly in front, with Auston Trusty scoring the opening goal on three minutes.

Turkey would battle back, though, with Baris Yilmaz scoring and setting up Arda Guler in the first half as the visitors took a 2-1 halftime lead. In the second, it was McKenzie who helped get the US off to a flyer, with his trademark long throw being instrumental in Sebastian Berhalter's equalizer, but substitute Kaan Ayhan would find a winner late on. Having already topped the group based on their two previous wins, the US will now face Bosnia and Herzegovina in San Francisco on Wednesday.

Paraguay 0-0 Australia

In San Francisco, both RC Strasbourg's Julio Enciso and former Nîmes midfielder Andrés Cubas were in the eleven, but could do little to break down the Australians. A match after having shown great courage to beat Turkey despite playing half of the match with ten men, they seemed a little leggy here, and were content to let Australia have much of the ball, with neither side fashioning much in the way of meaningful chances.

In the end, Paraguay will be sweating their place in the next round. They have four points, the same as top-ranked Sweden, but a negative goal difference owing to their heavy loss to the United States could be their undoing with six more groups yet to conclude. As for the Socceroos, having finished in second place, they'll take on an opponent as yet to be determined in Dallas next Friday.
