Bruno Genesio has been appointed Olympique de Marseille head coach, bringing with him more than a decade of top-level managerial experience in Ligue 1 and European competition.

Olympique de Marseille have appointed Bruno Genesio as their new head coach, signing on a X-year deal with the Southern side.

The appointment sees Genesio return to a familiar Ligue 1 environment after two seasons in charge of Lille OSC, where he guided Les Dogues back to the UEFA Champions League. Marseille will become the fourth Ligue 1 club of his managerial career following spells with Olympique Lyonnais, Stade Rennais and Lille.

A former midfielder, Genesio began his coaching journey within Lyon's academy structure before progressing through the club's youth and reserve teams. After serving as assistant coach with the first team, he was appointed Lyon manager in December 2015.

During more than three seasons at the helm, Lyon consistently competed near the top of Ligue 1 and regularly featured in European competition. The club also continued its tradition of promoting academy graduates, with several young players establishing themselves in the first team during his tenure.

"The decision to appoint Bruno Genesio came naturally through our discussions. His experience, his knowledge of top-level football and his ability to build competitive teams are a perfect fit for the ambitions we hold for Olympique de Marseille. We share a common vision of football, of player development and of building a high-performing squad over the long term. We will work closely together to build a group capable of meeting the demands of this club and the expectations of its supporters." -- Grégory Lorenzi, Sporting Director of Olympique de Marseille.

A sucessful return to management

Following a period away from management, Genesio returned to Ligue 1 with Rennes in March 2021. His impact was immediate as he helped the Breton club secure European qualification before overseeing one of the most successful periods in their recent history.

Rennes finished fourth in Ligue 1 during the 2021-22 season, recording a club-record 82 league goals. The team established itself as a regular contender for European places while also gaining valuable experience in UEFA competitions.

After departing Rennes in 2023, Genesio took charge of Lille ahead of the 2024-25 campaign. Working with a squad undergoing significant changes, he once again demonstrated his ability to build competitive teams. Under his leadership, Lille secured a return to the UEFA Champions League and remained among the leading sides in Ligue 1.

His work across Lyon, Rennes and Lille has helped establish a reputation as a coach capable of combining attractive football with consistent results. Throughout his managerial career, he has also been recognised for his ability to develop young players and help them transition to the highest level.

Those qualities are expected to play an important role at Marseille, where a number of emerging talents are looking to establish themselves within the first-team setup.

"I chose to join Olympique de Marseille because I was drawn in by the challenge that was presented to me. OM is a unique club, with an exceptional history, a strong identity and supporters whose passion is recognised far beyond its borders. I am truly delighted to be part of this new project. I would like to thank Frank McCourt, Stéphane Richard and Grégory Lorenzi for their trust in me. I cannot wait to begin working with everyone at the club and with the players to build a squad worthy of Olympique de Marseille's ambitions." --Bruno Genesio

Genesio now arrives at the Stade Vélodrome with extensive experience of Ligue 1 and European football. Marseille supporters will hope that experience can help the club achieve its ambitions in both domestic and continental competition.

The challenge awaiting him is a significant one, but so too is the opportunity. Having enjoyed success at each of his previous Ligue 1 clubs, Bruno Genesio now begins the next chapter of his coaching career in one of French football's most demanding and passionate environments.
