AS Saint-Étienne and OGC Nice failed to find a breakthrough in a tense and physical first-leg encounter at Stade Geoffroy-Guichard, leaving everything to play for ahead of Friday’s decisive return leg on the Côte d’Azur.

There was little to separate AS Saint-Étienne and OGC Nice as the two sides played out a tense 0-0 draw in the first leg of their Ligue 1/Ligue 2 promotion-relegation play-off at Stade Geoffroy-Guichard on Monday night.

With a place in next season’s Ligue 1 still hanging in the balance, both teams approached the occasion cautiously in a contest short on clear-cut opportunities but high on intensity and physical commitment.

Philippe Montanier opted for an attacking quartet of Irvin Cardona, Zuriko Davitashvili, Augustine Boakye and Lucas Stassin for the hosts, while Claude Puel welcomed back several key internationals for Nice, including Hicham Boudaoui and Kodjo Peprah Oppong.

The visitors initially looked the more comfortable side in possession, although they suffered an early setback when Boudaoui was forced off injured after just 10 minutes, with Charles Vanhoutte replacing him in midfield.

Despite Nice gradually taking control territorially, chances remained scarce throughout the first half. Morgan Sanson fired off target from distance before Jonathan Clauss also failed to test the goalkeeper from a free-kick as the visitors struggled to break down a disciplined Saint-Étienne block.

Neither side able to find cutting edge

At the other end, the home side found it equally difficult to create danger in open play, with both teams guilty of frequent misplaced passes and rushed decisions in the final third.

Nice came closest before the break when Peprah Oppong headed narrowly wide from a Clauss delivery, while both sides also had penalty appeals waved away in a scrappy and stop-start first period.

Montanier’s side emerged with greater ambition after the interval and briefly enjoyed their best spell of the match. Davitashvili proved the liveliest attacking outlet for the Verts, while Boakye sent a volley just over the crossbar shortly after the hour mark.

Remarkably, neither side managed a single shot on target during the entire encounter, highlighting the tension and tactical caution surrounding the occasion.

As the second half wore on, signs of fatigue became increasingly apparent within the Nice ranks following their recent Coupe de France final involvement, while Saint-Étienne appeared physically stronger in the closing stages.

The hosts pushed for a late winner in front of an expectant Geoffroy-Guichard crowd, but Nice defended resolutely, with the visitors grateful for several important interventions from their back line.

The tie now heads to the Allianz Riviera on Friday for the decisive second leg, where both clubs will battle for a place in Ligue 1 next season.
