Olympique de Marseille have officially changed the club's logo for the first time since 2004

Last night marked a big moment for Olympique de Marseille, who have redesigned their club logo for the first time since 2004. During a gala diner for the club's foundation, a whole new visual identity was announced for the club - which has been immediately put into place today.

The southern club said they have mixed the club's history with a minimalist and practical design with a "clean geometric structure" which gives "strength and clarity".

The new version of the badge was accompanied by an arrange of imagery showing off different uses for the iconography. A new colour, called 'Marseille blue' has mixed the historic colours of the club to reach a darker pallet. 'Marseille gold' was conceived based off the Notre Dame de la Garde colour, a historic building and iconic in the Marseille skyline. It marks a complete departure from their previous badge, harking to the minimalist font of their 1930-1970 emblem.

"The logo is important because it represents the club’s identity, and it needs to evolve over time," explains general manager Alessandro Antonello. "We need to appeal to and connect with new generations, without turning our backs on OM’s past or history. This logo must be adaptable to all media channels and digital platforms; this is essential for the club’s future."

It was a feeling shared by interim President, Alban Juster: "This logo is the culmination of two years’ work. It will live on through the club’s collections and the team’s achievements; it will have a life of its own. There are those who are in favour of the change, and those who aren’t," says the OM CEO, Before making a bold prediction: "When the fans see the logo on the shirt, they’ll appreciate its beauty, and I think that, in time, everyone will be happy to embrace this new identity."
