After scoring a double against Brest on Saturday, plenty of folks want to know about Auxerre's American-born Swiss defender Bryan Okoh -- learn more in our latest One To Watch!
Having joined Auxerre in January, defender Bryan Okoh is helping Christophe Pélissier's side move up the table in style. Following in the footsteps of the club's legendary Swiss defender Stéphane Grichting, he is looking to be vital for their chances of survival, and his rather unique career path has helped him develop well, both on and off the pitch. Born in Houston to parents of Nigerian and Congolese extraction, he moved to Switzerland at a young age, playing first with amateurs FC Espagnol Lausanne before joining Lausanne-Sport, the city's biggest club.
Signed by Red Bull Salzburg at 16, he was then sent on loan to Liefering, a satellite club playin gin the second division, and for whom he immediately stood out, rapidly absorbing the rigorous tactical training for which the enterprise is famed. He immediately stood out for his strong play in the UEFA Youth League
Speaking recently to Flashscore, Okoh underscored that focus and its holistic application has helped him develop into the player he currently is: "Tactically, there is a great deal of intensity—a lot of data analysis—and this allows us to be physically prepared, and the league itself is also intense. This applies even more to the training sessions, which are extremely tough, involving a high level of player activity both on and off the pitch."
At the age of 18, Okoh's play had impressed to the point where he had even been called up to the Swiss senior team, but an ill-timed knee injury curtailed that. Now 22, he was regularly a part of the U-21s, and even has an eye on returning, even if Manuel Akanji and Nico Elvedi look nailed on as starters for the World Cup this summer and fans of the US national team -- for whom he retains eligibility -- have been following his performances with interest.

After six seasons with Red Bull Salzburg and less than an hour of time on the pitch to show for it, having spent much of it on loan, Okoh needed a new challenge. This summer he took that step, returning to Lausanne with the prospect of European football on offer via the Conference League. While they've endured a rather uneven season in the league, Okoh was key to their impressive run in the competition. Knocking out Turkish giants Besiktas to reach the league phase (with Okoh scoring in the first leg), they had one of the competition's best defences and conceded just three goals in their six matches, including an impressive 1-0 home win against Fiorentina to seal their place in the playoff round.
It was a relatively quiet winter transfer window in Ligue 1 McDonald's -- Paris FC made a raft of big moves to avoid the drop, and Lyon brought in the exciting attacking prospect Endrick on loan. Lower down the table, there were even fewer moves, but Auxerre did cannily well to add not only Okoh on a three-and-a-half year deal, but also Romain Faivre, who was a success in France but struggled to establish himself with Bournemouth. While Faivre's two assists on Saturday were impressive, Okoh has been a revelation, stepping into the void left by an injury suffered by Chilean international Francisco Sierralta to start in each of the last six matches.
Now a key part of Auxerre's battle to avoid the drop, Okoh has helped rapidly improve the Burgundians' defence, with clean sheets in two of their last three matches. Strong in the air, as he showed on Saturday, he also has impressed with his versatility, as he's able to play both in a three or four-man defence. Relatively quick, but still developing the range of passing necessary to succeed in the modern game, he is comfortable against any sort of opposing forward, as he told Flashscore: I have an adaptable profile. I enjoy playing one-on-one and I know that every situation will be different, and I also prepare myself based on the opponent. I have no problem facing opponents who are tall and fast, or those who are smaller and more dynamic."
Thus, with his versatility and strong play a valued asset, Auxerre have unearthed a real gem, and with relegation hopefully avoided, the team with Okoh in the fold can begin to look forward to next season and a potential climb towards the European places.
