Didier Drogba lit up Ligue 1 McDonald's before going on to conquer Europe. On his 48th birthday, we reflect on one of the most prolific forwards to have graced French football in the 21st century.

A career-defining year with OM

Some players don't need to spend long at a club to cultivate a legendary status. Drogba is certainly one of them. From humble beginnings in Ligue 2 BKT, the Abidjan native quickly climbed the ladder in French football, going from Le Mans to EA Guingamp. The striker's 17 league goals in his first full campaign with the club guided them to a third-place finish and earned Drogba a career-defining move to the Vélodrome

The Ivorian described signing his contract at Marseille as "a dream that was coming to fruition"; it was a move that would ultimately allow him to go on and accomplish other dreams.

In his one and only season with Les Phocéens (2003/04), Drogba scored an incredible 19 goals in Ligue 1 McDonald's, including one that was awarded goal of the season. He would win the Player of the Month trophy on two occasions, whilst his goals in Europe (11 between the Champions League and UEFA Cup, now known as the Europa League), helped OM to the final of the UEFA Cup, where they would eventually be defeated by Spanish side Valencia.

From Ligue 2 to the Champions League

At the time, embarking on a European adventure was a massive step up for Drogba. "You need to know that I had never played teams of the calibre of Liverpool and Inter Milan. Only a year and a half ago, I was playing in the second division, and then I was playing against players that I was used to seeing on TV [...] I had the chance to show them what I was capable of," said Drogba.

And that he did. His one season with Marseille certainly turned heads, including that of Chelsea. He would go on to play 381 times for the Blues, netting 164 goals in that time. And whilst he experienced disappointment in a major European final (again) in 2008, he netted the winning spotkick as Chelsea lifted the Champions League for the first time in their history in Munich in 2012.

He is one of the most iconic forwards of the 21st century, full stop. And whilst he is most commonly associated with his trophy-laiden eight year spell at Stamford Bridge, he is very much a forward 'Made in France'. With 39 goals in 80 games in Ligue 1 McDonald's, and a further 12 goals (in 64 games) in Ligue 2, his story is similar to so many within L'Héxagone, with his time in France's top-flight providing the platform for what would be a stellar and memorable career.

Happy Birthday, Didier Drogba!
