Veteran manager Antoine Kombouaré has taken the reins at Paris FC

Following the dismissal of Stéphane Gilli, Paris FC have appointed Antoine Kombouaré head coach. Learn more about the veteran manager's impressive career with our latest.

A strong career on the pitch

It's been a season of veteran managers finding new roles in Ligue 1 -- Pierre Sage, Claude Puel and Franck Haise have all been installed on benches across France's top flight since the end of last season. Now, another familiar face, easily recognized by his ever-present ballcap, is back in the top division in the form of Kombouaré. A serial winner as a central defender, he came up with FC Nantes before joining Paris Saint-Germain for a trophy-laden spell in which he earned the nickname "Casque d'Or" for his timely headers. After brief spells in Switzerland and Scotland, he retired as a player in 1999, taking the reins of PSG's B team.

His tenure there impressed, but his first role as a head coach, with RC Strasbourg, was somewhat disappointing. After a strong first season in Alsace, he was dismissed early in his second with the club battling relegation. Ahead of the 2005/6 season, he took charge at Valenciennes, then playing in Ligue 2 and over four seasons led them first to promotion and then three seasons of comfortable survival, despite a small budget, underscoring his talent for success with limited means.

A brief and frustrating spell with PSG, and honors with Lens and Nantes

On the back of that success, his former club, Paris Saint-Germain, came calling, and he replaced Paul Le Guen ahead of the 2009/10 season. However, the club's takeover by QSI meant that a more globally-recognized name was required and despite being top of the table (and having won the Coupe de France in his first season), Kombouaré was let go in mid-season.

After a brief spell in Saudi Arabia, Kombouaré has spent the last dozen years in charge of Lens (where he helped earn promotion), Dijon, Toulouse and (twice) his formative club, FC Nantes. He helped all of these avoid relegation at every turn and even led Les Canaris to a surprise Coupe de France win, but a push for a more idealistic presence on the bench at La Beaujoire saw him step down at the end of last season.

A safe pair of hands in the capital

With a modicum of quality present across most of the sides at the bottom of Ligue 1 McDonald's and the club winless since mid-January, Paris FC had to make a move to avoid being pulled into what looks a dangerous relegation battle. Dismissing Stéphane Gilli, they moved to appoint Kombouaré, underscoring his experience in the division and to avoid the drop.

Speaking on his appointment, owner Antoine Arnault said, “We are delighted with the arrival of Antoine Kombouaré, a recognized figure in the world of football whose experience will allow us to continue the development of Paris FC. He shares our values of commitment and high standards. We are convinced that he possesses all the necessary qualities to lead the team towards its objectives."

Given the heavy investment in the club, and the talent on hand, the hope is that not only can Kombouaré continue to burnish his reputation for reliability but also power the capital side up the table as they look to stabilize ahead of next season.
