Former Red Star and Stade Rennais coach Habib Beye succeeds Roberto De Zerbi as coach of Marseille

Olympique de Marseille have announced the appointment of Habib Beye as first team head coach, after leaving Stade Rennais. The former Senegal international has signed an 18-month contract with Les Olympiens, suceeding Roberto De Zerbi as manager of the club.

Habib Beye began his professional journey at RC Strasbourg in the late 1990s. A reliable and combative right-back, he quickly built a reputation for defensive solidity and consistency.

In 2003, he made the pivotal move to Olympique de Marseille, stepping into one of the most demanding environments in French football. At the Vélodrome, Beye embodied the fighting spirit and commitment expected by the Marseille faithful.

Disciplined defensively yet capable of contributing going forward, he earned the trust of successive managers and teammates alike. His growing influence culminated in the captain’s armband. In 2007, Beye moved to England to join Newcastle United, before spells at Aston Villa and Doncaster Rovers.

Beye’s transition into coaching felt inevitable. In 2021, he took charge of Red Star FC, where he quickly implemented a distinct blueprint built on discipline, intensity and collective ambition. Operating in the highly competitive Championnat National, Beye guided Red Star to promotion, demonstrating his ability to structure a project and instil a winning mentality.

Beye spent the last year and a half as manager of Stade Rennais, where he departed in the last week - quickly finding a dream job at Marseille, returning to where he was club captain.
