It's Le Classique! Marseille will make the trip up to the Parc des Princes on Sunday night to face their fierce rivals, PSG. To mark the latest edition of the legendary rivalry, we revisit five iconic matches between the pair.
The PSG-OM rivalry really came alive in the early '90s, when Canal Plus' investment in Les Parisiens saw them able to compete with a globe-trotting Marseille, who, as it turns out, were on the verge of delivering France its first-ever Champions League title.
PSG, managed by Artur Jorge at the time, were the new kids on the block, and prior to this encounter in 1992, the manager did not mince his words. Jorge spoke about giving OM "hell" and saying that they would "walk over" PSG. Bernard Tapie, OM president at the time, riled up his troops by showing the players Jorge's comments in the pre-match team-talk.

It certainly riled up the players. What preceded was one of the most heated games witnessed in Ligue 1 McDonald's. Miraculously, there were only six yellow cards, from an incredible 55 fouls. The game has since been termed the "butchery". Alen Boksic got the only goal in a slender Marseille win, but the scoreline is hardly the reason that this edition of the Classique is etched in folklore. It was a match that served as the genesis for what would become Ligue 1 McDonald's greatest rivalry.
PSG were a delight to watch in the early 2000s, and the mercurial Ronaldinho was one of the main reasons why. He lit up this fixture back in 2002, netting a first-half brace at the Parc des Princes, with Martin Alejandro Cardetti putting the cherry on top of the cake with a second-half strike.
With Marseille and PSG not running each other too close in Ligue 1 McDonald's in recent years, there has been a lack of title-deciders between the pair. However, that was not the case back in 2016, when they met in the Coupe de France final.
In this encounter, staged at the Stade de France, PSG rushed into an early lead through Blaise Matuidi. However, OM came roaring back less than 10 minutes later as Florian Thauvin levelled the scoreline.
Les Parisiens would ultimately run away with the game in the second half thanks to goals from two of the most emblematic players of the QSI era: Edinson Cavani and Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The latter netted a brace, with Michy Batshuayi's consolation not enough, as PSG lifted the trophy.
The butchery pt.II? This game is something of an outlier in recent times. In the past 23 Ligue 1 McDonald's games between the pair, PSG have won 19; OM have won only one. Thauvin netted the only goal of the game as Marseille ended their long wait without a league win against their fierce rivals.
Like the edition of this game back in 1992, it was fiesty. There were 36 fouls in this one and 17 cards, including five red cards (Neymar, Leandro Paredes, Layvin Kurzawa, Jordan Amavi, and Dario Benedetto), all of which came in second-half injury-time. Quite the homage to the days of old, all the way down to the scoreline.
Good things come to those who wait, and Marseille had to wait quite a while for this one. When Roberto De Zerbi's side hosted PSG back in September, OM had not beaten the reigning Ligue 1 McDonald's champions in a league game at the Vélodrome in 14 years. Granted, there was that Coupe de France win back in 2023 (2-1), secured by that spectacular Ruslan Malinovskyi finish, but OM's elimination in the next round of that competition - and at the hands of lower-tier opposition - somewhat took the gloss off that triumph.

And not only did OM wait 14 years for this moment, but they were also forced to wait another day, too, with a deluge in the city of Marseille seeing this game postponed for 24 hours. All of that pent-up anticipation manifested itself in an electric start for De Zerbi's men, as they opened the scoring in just the 5th minute thanks to a Marquinhos own goal. There were no further goals and whilst this may not have been a classic in terms of its content, the context of it and the momentous nature of the win ensure that it is a fixture that won't be forgotten any time soon in the Phocéen city.
