After a gritty 1-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain last weekend, AS Monaco were eager to build on that performance ahead of their returning to European action against Galatasaray on Tuesday. To do so, they would have to take a daunting trip to the far west of France to face a Brest team that had recorded their own impressive win last weekend, edging high-flying RC Strasbourg 2-1. Both managers made few changes, with Mika Biereth's leading the line for the Prinicipality side and Soumaïla Coulibaly playing in defence for the hosts the only differences of note.
In a driving wind, both sides drove hard to get the opening goal, with Daouda Guindo and Rémy Labeau-Lascary both trying their luck from range in the opening quarter of an hour. Lucas Hradecky then pulled off a stunning save to keep out the energetic Labeau-Lascary (20') before Kamory Doumbia put Les Pirates ahead (28') by being first to a rebound. It was the second goal in three matches for the Malian, and gave his side a deserved lead.

With halftime approaching, Monaco pushed for an equalizer, but a combination of Grégoire Coudert (three saves) and the visitors' wayward finishing allowed Brest to preserve their lead until the break. After the interval, they would nearly double it as Guindo hit the crossbar (54') before things took a turn, with Ludovic Ajorque being sent off for a poor challenge on Lamine Camara on the hour.
Hoping to get back into the match with a man advantage, Sébastien Pocognoli made attacking changes, bringing on Paul Pogba, Stanis Idumbo and Paris Brunner, but his efforts were for nought, and Brest could have even had a second, as Mama Baldé was close to scoring on the counter in stoppage time. With the result, Brest go provisionally ninth, the relegation worries of a month ago well behind them.
Kamory Doumbia has reached four Ligue 1 McDonald's goals in just 11 appearances, the quickest he's reached that total in a single season
