André-Pierre Gignac celebrates his 40th birthday today, marking a milestone for a striker whose career has spanned nearly 20 professional seasons and left a lasting impression on Ligue 1. Before becoming a landmark figure abroad, Gignac built his reputation across spells at Lorient, Toulouse and Olympique de Marseille, where his physical presence, direct movement and penalty-area instincts established him among the division’s elite forwards.
His defining domestic breakthrough came at Toulouse FC, where he finished as Ligue 1’s top scorer in 2008-09 with 24 goals, scoring in 19 separate league fixtures. That total remains one of the highest single-season returns of the modern era and propelled him into the national fold. Highly competitive, he led TFC into European qualification and became central to their attacking identity.
A move to Marseille in the summer of 2010 marked the beginning of a five-year spell in one of French football’s most demanding environments. Gignac scored 59 Ligue 1 goals for OM, reaching double figures in four consecutive campaigns and finishing as the club’s leading scorer across the 2013–15 period. He developed a reputation for influence in major fixtures, notably scoring in Le Classique and in pivotal matches that shaped OM’s European qualification bids. In total, he registered 77 goals for Marseille, placing him alongside the club’s most productive modern-era forwards.
Internationally, Gignac collected 36 caps for France and featured at both EURO 2012 and EURO 2016, appearing in the final at the Stade de France.
In 2015, he opted for a career route rarely taken by French internationals of his status, joining Tigres UANL in Mexico. A decade later, the move stands as one of the most successful overseas ventures by a Ligue 1 graduate. Gignac has since won multiple league titles, become Tigres’ all-time leading scorer and remained central to their competitive cycle well into his late thirties.
At 40, Gignac continues playing at a high level, still competing for major honours in Liga MX. From Golden Boot winner at Toulouse to focal point in Marseille’s attack and enduring icon abroad, his career remains defined by consistency, longevity and decisive contribution.
Joyeux anniversaire, André-Pierre Gignac! 🇫🇷
