Sambou Soumano scored a vital brace for FC Lorient on Sunday

After helping FC Lorient to a vital win over OGC Nice with a brace, learn more about Sambou Soumano, Les Merlus' next top striking prospect in our latest "One To Watch"

In the tradition

For a team lacking in much in the way of silverware (just a single Coupe de France win in 2002), FC Lorient have developed a reputation as a real incubator of talent. Nowhere is this more true than in attack -- luminaries like André-Pierre Gignac, Kévin Gameiro, Yoane Wissa and (most recently) Eli Junior Kroupi have all impressed after coming through with Les Merlus. Now, another prospect could be on the verge of announcing himself, with Sambou Soumano coming to the fore this season.

Born in the eastern Senegalese city of Tambacounda, he was spotted at the academy of Youth Elite Foot by scouts from FC Pau. His strong play there saw him picked up by Lorient, where he quickly moved from the reserves to the first team, making an impressive 21 appearances while scoring three times on a talented attacking side.

Disappointment on loan

After that cracking season at a young age, Soumano was surprisingly sent out on loan for the 2022/23 season, with Terem Moffi preferred. Spells with Eupen in the Belgian top flight and Rodez in Ligue 2 were equally fruitless. Soumano scored just three goals in his two stints, and he returned to Brittany humbled by his experience. The following campaign, even with Moffi having departed, he was on loan again, this time to Quevilly-Rouen, again in Ligue 2, where he was a sensation, scoring 15 goals.

He would return to Lorient last season, and even if Kroupi was the starter, Soumano was still a vital contributor, netting 14 times as his side were promoted at the first time of asking. Back in Ligue 1 this season, he's faced competition from Mohamed Bamba and Aiyegun Tosin, and has struggled to nail down a starting sport, even if he boasts an impressive scoring rate.

Indeed, while his brace was scored as a starter, Soumano has scored off the bench an incredible 11 times since the atart of the 2024/25 season -- the best figure in Europe. But that wasn't enough to satisfy him, even as the team struggled. Speaking earlier this season, he underscored that he wanted to start matches and to catch the eye of the Senegal national team, saying, "I’ve always said I don’t want to be a substitute all my life. But I've had a middling start to the season because I haven’t scored a lot of goals and I haven’t played much."

Speaking of his dream -- to represent the Lions of Teranga -- earlier this year, Soumano was circumspect as to his chances, but not his desire to do so, saying, "At home in Senegal we say: “lou diot Yomb“, that is to say “everything at his time”. I am waiting for my time! I want to wear the shirt so much, to represent my country, my region too. The Tambacoundois are so eager to see one of their players from their city represented Senegal, the flag of Senegal."

If his play this weekend is any evidence, and if Lorient can continue to pull away from the relegation zone, Soumano may not have long to wait!
