Folarin Balogun scored the match's only goal as Monaco won on the road

In need of a win less their chances of progress to the Champions League knockout rounds slip away, an injury-hit AS Monaco responded to win away in Bødo, 1-0. Catch up on all the action with our recap.

A slow start and a crucial strike from Balogun

With Ansu Fati and Krépin Diatta the latest players to join a crowded treatment table for AS Monaco, the Principality trip's long trip north to face Norwegian side Bødo/Glimt on Matchday 4 of the Champions League looked a tough one. That the match was played in driving rain with a wind chill of 0 Celsius hardly helped matters, and both sides took their time getting to grips with the state of play.

Indeed, it would take nearly twenty minutes before Thilo Kehrer had the match's first chance (19'), the defender flashing a header wide. Monaco would slowly grow into the match, with Maghnes Akliouche firing over before Folarin Balogun broke the deadlock just before the break, the American scoring his first-ever Champions League goal from a tight angle (43'). Kasper Hogh would hit the post for Bødo/Glimt in added time, but Monaco would take their narrow lead into the break.

Monaco ride their luck but finish strong

In the second half, Bødo -- who also had just two points heading into this match -- turned up the pressure, but Philipp Köhn stood fast in the Monaco goal, keeping out Patrik Berg and Hogh in quick succession (52'). Moments later, he did well to keep out a curling effort by Jens Petter Hauge before denying Hogh once more. The big Dane hit the post (69') but that was as close as the hosts would come to equalizing, as changes by Monaco manager Sébastien Pocognoli would bring more stability to midfield.

It was even Monaco who finished the match the strongest, with Jostein Gundersen being send off eight minutes from time. While chances from Kassoum Ouattara (79') and substitute Mamadou Coulibaly (87') failed to find the target, the Monégasques would leave Norway with a crucial three points ahead of their trip to Pafos in three weeks' time. Before that, though, they'll face RC Lens in Ligue 1 McDonald's as the two tangle at the Stade-Louis II on Saturday night.
