La Vinotinto capped off a perfect ending to their run of matches in Group B with a comprehensive win over Jamaica in Group B. The Reggae Boyz, already eliminated, played a much rotated-side, and regulars like Clermont Foot's Shamar Nicholson were only used off the bench by manager Heimir Hallgrímsson. Jamaica finished the competition with no points, and only one goal scored in their three matches.
Venezuela, who left Toulouse FC midfielder Cristian Cásseres Jr. on the bench in an eleven that also included some changes, got goals from Eduard Bello, Salomón Rondón and Eric Ramírez, all in the second half, to top the group with a perfect record. Former Dijon FCO forward Jhonder Cádiz also remained on the bench, but both players will hope for a chance to see the pitch as Venezuela get set for what looks to be an exciting quarterfinal matchup against a Canada side that includes LOSC Lille striker Jonathan David and Olympique de Marseille's newest signing, midfielder Ismaël Koné. That match is set for Friday evening at AT&T Stadium in Dallas, Texas.
It was a frustrating elimination from the competition for Mexico, who were unable to break down the Ecuadorian defense despite dominating possession and having nearly twice as many shots as their opponents. Veteran goalkeeper Alexander Dominguez made three saves to preserve the result to ensure the coach Félix Sánchez Bas' side progressed at the expense of their opponents.
The two sides finished Group B play with four points each, but Ecuador finished ahead of Mexico on goal difference, El Tri having scored just a solitary goal in their three matches in the tournament. Jackson Porozo, formerly of ESTAC Troyes, was an unused substitute on the bench, but the central defender will hope to feature in the quarterfinals as Ecuador take on favorites Argentina, a team including former Paris Saint-Germain stars Leo Messi and Ángel Di María, in the competition's first quarterfinal on Thursday night in Houston.
