Spain continued what has been an impressive start to the tournament with a comprehensive win over surprise package Georgia, led by FC Metz attacker Georges Mikautadze, the tournament's leading scorer through the group stage. La Roja started the match off on the back foot, as defender Robin Le Normand put a cross into his own net less than twenty minutes into the match to give Georgia a shock lead.
The Spanish would battle back and level the match through Rodri just before the break, but there was still work to be done, and it looked as if Georgia had the defensive nous necessary to force the match into extra time. The encounter being on level terms was short-lived, as just the other side of halftime, Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Fabián Ruiz continued what has been a torrid run of form in the tournament with a fine back-post header after Georgia failed to clear a free kick.
Ruiz would then turn provider, setting up Nico Williams for Spain's third before Dani Olmo concluded the scoring with just ten minutes to play, capping a 4-1 win and sealing a date with hosts Germany on Friday.
Paris Saint-Germain defender Milan Škriniar and his Slovakian teammates came within in ninety seconds of making history on Sunday afternoon in Gelsenkirchen. The start to the match was nervy at both ends, and feisty as well -- all of Marc Guehi, Kobbie Mainoo and Jude Bellingham were into the referee's notebook in the match's first 20 minutes. The underdogs, who had never been beyond the Round of 16 in a major tournament, would take advantage of this chaoatic start to score first.
A ball in from the right was taken down by David Strelec, who cleverly slipped in Ivan Schranz on the overlap, the winger coolly slotting home midway through the first half. The goal from the Slovaks would wake up the Three Lions, though, and they came close to equalizing on several occasions before the break. After a similarly chippy second half Jude Bellingham would strike an equalizer for England deep in added time in the second half.
Minutes into extra time, Harry Kane would find the net with what would prove to be the winner, sealing a date for England with Breel Embolo and Switzerland this Saturday in the quarterfinals.
