Mathieu Valbuena celebrates his birthday today!

Born on 28 September 1984 near Bordeaux, Valbuena carved out one of the most remarkable careers in modern French football. Standing just 1m67 tall, he defied the odds with his technical brilliance, vision, and endless determination.

From Libourne to OM glory

Valbuena’s professional breakthrough came with Libourne Saint-Seurin, but it was his move to Olympique de Marseille in 2006 that changed his life. Quickly becoming a fan favourite at the Vélodrome, “Petit Vélo” dazzled supporters with his dribbling and spectacular goals.

His crowning moment came in 2010, when he helped Marseille clinch their first Ligue 1 title in 18 years, alongside two Coupe de la Ligue triumphs. His unforgettable Champions League strikes against Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund further underlined his big-game pedigree.

A loyal servant for Les Bleus

Valbuena earned 52 caps for the French national team, scoring 8 goals and providing countless assists. His creativity and set-piece delivery made him a trusted option for Raymond Domenech, Laurent Blanc, and Didier Deschamps.

He represented France at the 2010 FIFA World Cup and at UEFA Euro 2012, bringing energy and spark to Les Bleus’ midfield and attack.

European chapters and longevity

After OM, Valbuena enjoyed spells with Dynamo Moscow, Olympique Lyonnais, and Olympiacos, where he won three Greek Super League titles. His professionalism and fighting spirit made him a leader wherever he played.

He later continued his career with Apollon Limassol in Cyprus before retiring, leaving behind a legacy of resilience, artistry, and moments that will live long in Ligue 1 memory.
