Both teams lined up strong sides, with only Thomas Meunier missing for the hosts, while Toulouse handed a debut to summer signing Abu Francis, the Ghanian midfielder having returned from injury. In a scrappy start to the match, it would take more than half an hour for the first meaningful chance to come, as Olivier Giroud saw an effort flash wide of the post after some good eork on the right flank by Aïssa Mandi.
Just before halftime, Lille -- who continued to dominate possession -- attacked again, this time getting forward on the left through Romain Perraud. His cross for Ngal'ayel Mukau was a good one but the young midfielder's effort was off-target and the match was scoreless at the break. Lille continued to be in the ascendancy after the interval, with Giroud testing Guillaume Restes, but it was Franck Magri who would break the deadlock for Les Violets, tapping home an effort that had come off the crossbar.

Midway through the half, Lille thought they had equalized, but Matias Fernandez-Pardo's shot was flagged offside. Les Dogues continued to push for a response, and their task was made easier ten minutes from time as youngster Alexis Vossah was sent off. In the final minute of regular time, a handball award Lille a penalty, and Nabil Bentaleb converted to level the match.
Then, in added time, the match took a final turn as Ethan Mbappé, on off the bench, fired in a winner eight minutes from time. Lurking at the back post, he slammed home a sublime volley to give his side ten points from their first four matches, a fine start that saw them top the table.
