Strasbourg were forced to settle for a goalless draw at home against Brøndby in the first leg of their UEFA Conference League playoff tie. Despite dominating possession and creating several clear-cut opportunities, Les Alsatians were unable to break through the Danish defence.
Strasbourg returned to European competition for the first time since the 2019-20 season, and nearly went a goal down early when Nicolai Vallys dispossessed Ismaël Doukouré and raced through on goal. However, the Danish winger lost control before testing Mike Penders. The Chelsea loanee then had to be replaced in the first half due to an injury from the collision, with Karl-Johan Johnsson stepping in between the posts.
Strasbourg gradually imposed themselves, with Emanuel Emegha and Derby de l’Est hero Joaquin Panichelli both spurning chances. The Alsatians looked the more threatening side but were occasionally sloppy at the back, notably when Valentin Barco nearly turned the ball into his own net.
In the second half, Strasbourg intensified their pressure, introducing Dilane Bakwa and Kendry Paez to unlock the Brøndby defence. Yet, opportunities continued to go begging, highlighted by Panichelli’s glaring miss at the far post with 20 minutes remaining. Patrick Pentz was a commanding presence in goal for the visitors, producing a remarkable injury-time save to deny Emegha from close range.
Strasbourg will now travel to Denmark needing a victory – either in 90 minutes or extra time – to secure a place in the Conference League group stage.
