Paris Saint-Germain engineered a dramatic comeback against Tottenham Hotspur to win the UEFA SuperCup -- find out more in our match recap.
After falling at the final hurdle in the FIFA Club World Cup final last month in the United States, defending Ligue 1 McDonald's champions Paris Saint-Germain were back in action in Udine, Italy this evening, taking part in the UEFA Super Cup against Europa League champions Tottenham Hotspur. Other than the suspended Jo˜ao Neves, Luis Enrique deployed a full strength XI, with Lucas Chevalier, the team's new goalkeeper, starting in goal.
Spurs, playing their first competitive match under new manager Thomas Frank, played a similarly strong side though, and were well up for the fight. Richarlison, leading the line after an uneven campaign last season, forced Chevalier into a fine save on the counter midway through the first half, and this effort was only the postponement of the opener for the English side. On a long free kick five minutes before the interval, Chevalier made a fine save onto the post, but the ball came back to the feet of Mickey van de Ven, who put Spurs ahead with a scuffed effort.

Just after the break, Spurs would double their lead in rather less impressive circumstances for Chevalier, as he spilled Cristián Romero's header into his own goal, allowing the London team to take a 2-0 lead. In a match where PSG had fashioned little in the way of chances, it looked like a goal which could potentially seal the result, but there was to be another twist in the tale for the capital side.
Enrique made a raft of attacking changes, and these would pay off five minutes from time, as Ousmane Dembélé whipped in a cross which was poorly cleared, allowing Lee Kang-In to slot home a low effort. Dembélé played provider again in stoppage time, playing the ball across goal, where Gonçalo Ramos headed in at the far post sending the match to penalties.
In the shootout, PSG fell behind quickly as Vitinha uncharacteristically missed with the opening effort, but Chevalier redeemed himself for his miscue by saving from van de Ven. Mathys Tel then fired wide with his effort, and Nuno Mendes scored with the fifth kick, allowing PSG to record a 4-3 shootout win and yet another trophy to what has been a bumper year.
Speaking post-match, Enrique enthused over the importance of the result and the character his team showed, while acknowledging that his side had been second-best much of the evening, saying, "I'm happy for all the players and especially for the fans. It's important to win this trophy, even if we preferred to rest to think about next season. It's difficult to play in a Super Cup final because you have to win the Champions League or the Europa League. It was strange to have such a short vacation, but once again I must say that I'm happy with my players. We're happy, we're champions!"
