Brondby are likely to be the more recognizable of the two clubs for fans of Ligue 1 McDonald's, having played Olympique Lyonnais in the group stage of the Europa League in 2021, and among their largely young side they also boast a trio of former Ligue 1 players. Austrian international Patrick Pentz spent a season with Stade de Reims, before leaving for Bayer Leverkusen, while captain Daniel Wass first made his name in the French top flight with Evian more than a decade ago, becoming famous for his fantastic free kicks. Finally, Stijn Spierings was a part of the team that helped Toulouse FC win the Coupe de France in 2023.
In addition to Lyon in 2021, Brondby also faced Les Gones in the same competition in 1997, losing 7-3 on aggregate in the first round. They've also faced Marseille in the Champions League in 1989 but managed only a draw and a defeat. Having beaten Faroese side HB to face Vikingur, they've started their domestic season with two wins and a loss.
As for Vikingur, the first club of former Bordeaux striker Arnór Guðjohnsen, they may lack in notable names, but are one of Iceland's oldest clubs, having been founded in 1908. They've faced French opposition just once, having been eliminated by Bordeaux in the 1981/2 UEFA Cup, and will need to be at their best to get past Brondby.
