Joaquín Panichelli’s arrival continues a busy summer for RC Strasbourg Alsace, with the Argentine striker becoming the latest piece of Liam Rosenior’s international rebuild. Signed from Spanish side Deportivo Alavés, the 21-year-old forward brings South American flair, Spanish second-tier experience—and the unmistakable footballing education of River Plate.
Strasbourg have overhauled their squad under Liam Rosenior and BlueCo’s sporting leadership, with Panichelli joining a young and international core that includes Valentín Barco, Pape Demba Diop and Samuel Amo-Ameyaw.
Panichelli’s footballing foundation was laid in Buenos Aires at River Plate, Argentina’s most decorated club and a bastion of youth development. His route wasn’t linear—a failed trial at Boca Juniors, a chance at River where his father once trained before injury cut his dream short—but it set him on a path towards professional football.
One of the most iconic figures to bridge this connection is Marcelo Gallardo. Gallardo blazed the trail. A creative midfielder with vision and flair, he joined AS Monaco in 1999 and starred for three seasons before a move to Paris Saint-Germain, where he shared a dressing room with Ronaldinho.
Others have followed. Radamel Falcao, though signed by Monaco from Atlético Madrid, first burst onto the scene at River Plate, scoring 45 goals in four seasons. He became a Ligue 1 icon in the mid-2010s, captaining Monaco to the 2016/17 title and mentoring talents like Kylian Mbappé.
Lucas Ocampos was a €13 million record signing for Monaco at just 18, plucked directly from River in 2012. His powerful running and direct style helped Monaco to promotion, before he joined Marseille, where he evolved into a fan favourite over four seasons.
Lucho González was a River star in the early 2000s and then became a popular figure at Olympique de Marseille, winning the 2009/10 title and a Coupe de la Ligue treble. More recently, Ligue 1 McDonald's clubs scouted the likes of Claudio Echeverri, Julián Álvarez, and Enzo Fernández during their River youth days, though other leagues moved quicker.
Panichelli is unlikely to be the finished product on day one in Alsace. Yet his attributes and lineage as a former River Plate star make him a smart bet for Strasbourg this transfer window.
