Toulouse FC defender Mark McKenzie and the US suffered a bitter defeat on home soil.

As the CONCACAF Gold Cup wrapped up in Houston, Texas, Mexico engineered a comeback win to take home their second successive title -- read our look back at the knockout rounds of a tournament that featured more than two dozen players based in France.

Quarterfinals:

A brilliant run for a Panama side led by Amir Murillo of Olympiqe de Marseille was ended in the first match of the round, as a late equalizer for Honduras forced extra time. Neither side could make a breakthrough, and it was the Hondurans who advanced. The next day saw another upset in a shootout, as a Canada side with former LOSC striker Jonathan David and Marseille defender Derek Cornelius were stunned by Guatemala, having played the second half with ten men. In the other matches, the US dumped out a Costa Rica side with former PSG 'keeper Keylor Navas, and Mexico handily beat Saudi Arabia.

Semifinals:

Drawn against Guatemala in the semifinals, the US rode an early double from Diego Luna into a comfortable 2-1 win. As for Honduras, after stunning Panama, their luck would change against the Mexicans, as they succumbed to a 1-0 defeat.

Final: Mexico 2-1 United States

There's never any love lost between these two sides, and even if the United States were missing some of their key attackers, their side -- which included McKenzie (who didn't feature) took an early lead through Chris Richards. Mexico wasted no time in levelling the score, as Raul Jimenez found the net just before the half hour. The match see-sawed back and forth until ten minutes before time, as a cleverly worked gambit at a set piece saw Mexico spring the offside trap, with veteran Edson Álvarez heading home the goal. On the bench for the winners was Guillermo Ochoa -- the former Ajaccio goalkeeper picked up his sixth title.
