Amine Gouiri's brace helped Marseille secure a place in next season's Champions League

A brace from Amine Gouiri and a goal from Mason Greenwood helped Olympique de Marseille beat Le Havre on the road, 3-1, securing a place in the league phase of next season's Champions League.

A crucial win in a hostile environment

Marseille seemed to have come out of a tough run of form, and galvanized by their training camp in Italy, have now picked up ten points from their last four matches, fending off the likes of Monaco and Lille as their respective charges for the Champions League stalled while the form of Gouiri has propelled Roberto de Zerbi's side into Europe's marquee competition next season, fulfilling the stated aim of their season.

Playing on the front foot in an attack-minded 4-2-3-1, Marseille dominated from start to finish, having their first big chance on ten minutes, as Adrien Rabiot, playing as a number ten, hit the crossbar with a glancing header. In control thanks to their strong pressing, Marseille would strike again just before the half hour, as a shot from Greenwood flashed wide of the far post. However, despite their domination, Marseille would see the match scoreless at the break.

Gouiri with a final flourish

In the second half, however, the match came to life, with Gouiri scoring his fifth goal in three matches just before the hour, netting with a chipped finish after a brilliant through ball from Pierre-Emile Højberg. From there, the chase was on, and Marseille kept the pressure on, with LĂ©onardo Balerdi ballooning a ball over the bar at a corner. Le Havre would draw level midway through the second half through Issa SoumarĂ©, but Marseille had a quick answer.

With l'OM pushing for a winner, Mason Greenwood put the visitors ahead with a wonder strike. Controlling a ball from substitute Luis Henrique at the edge of the area, he turned a rifled a shot into the top corner, his 19th goal of the season in the league. Not to be outdone, Gouiri sealed the result in added time, taking advantage of a Le Havre mix-up at the back to score his tenth goal since joining the club in February. With the result, Marseille thus confirmed their place in next season's Champions League, making good on their stated intentions.
