With just one matchday remaining in the 2024/25 Ligue 2 BKT season, the race to avoid relegation is boiling down to a tense, two-way shootout between Clermont Foot and FC Martigues. While SM Caen have already sealed their fate as the first club relegated to the Championnat National, the identity of the second direct relegation spot—and the team who will scrape into a relegation play-off—is still up in the air.
On paper, Clermont's task looks more manageable. They travel to Rodez AF (14th, 38 pts), a side that has already secured safety and has nothing left to play for.
By contrast, Martigues face a daunting trip to Brittany to take on FC Lorient - the current league leaders (1st, 68 pts), who have already clinched promotion back to Ligue 1 McDonald's. But the stakes are still high for Lorient: they hold just a two-point lead over Paris FC and will be gunning for the title on the final day.
There is, however, reason to believe in Martigues. Under Hakim Malek, they have shown remarkable resilience in 2025, taking a point from Paris FC last time out and winning seven matches in the second half of the season—compared to just two victories before the winter break.
They’ll need to draw on every ounce of that fighting spirit if they are to survive or at least prolong their season through the relegation play-off against the National’s third-placed side. If not, it will be a straight return back to the third division after a historic promotion a year ago.
