While none of the current Ligue 1 Portuguese players were on the scoresheet, two of them were in the starting lineup as the Paris Saint-Germain duo of Vitinha and Nuno Mendes were included from the off. Former AS Monaco midfielder Bernardo Silva struck the opener, a goal that seemed to open the floodgates, and Roberto Martinez's team eventually ran out 3-0 winners, a result that leaves them atop Group F. With the result, Portugal confirmed their place in the Round of 16, and will face Georgia in their final group stage match on Wednesday. For Türkiye, former LOSC Lille right back Zeki Çelik was included from the off, while Les Dogues' Yusuf Yazici came off the bench, but neither could do much to affect the outcome of the game, and the Turks will now face Czechia on Wednesday, with a draw likely enough to see them into the Round of 16.
The Belgians, having been shocked by Slovakia in their opening match in a 1-0 loss, turned in a far more assured display against Romania, who had won their opening match. Belgium under Domenico Tedesco lined up in a 3-4-3 formation, with several changes from their first match. Stade Rennais defender Arthur Theate was in the starting eleven, and he was joined by five former Ligue 1 players, one of whom, Youri Tielemans, formerly of AS Monaco, struck the opener after just two minutes of play, slotting home from the edge of the area. The bit between their teeth, Belgium continued to press throughout the match, and scarcely allowed the Romanians a chance save a well-saved header on four minutes. Kevin De Bruyne netted the Belgians' second goal ten minutes from time, and on the heels of Ukraine's win over Slovakia yesterday leaves all four teams in the group with three points from their first two matches ahead of Wednesday's finale.
In Group F, Georgia and FC Metz's Georges Mikautadze had work to do following their loss to Türkiye in their opening match. The hero of the run-in in Ligue 1, Mikautadze lined up in attack alongside Napoli's Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, and would give his team a lead on the stroke of halftime. A penalty came from a handball by Czechia defender Robin Hranáč and the Metz striker coolly slotted the ball home to give his team the lead. Czechia would strike back, though, leveling the match on the hour through Patrik Schick. No further goals would come, though and the result leaves Georgia with it all to do against Portugal, needing to better Czechia's result on Wednesday if they're to retain a hope of progressing in either second or third place.
