By the summer of 2009, Lyon were in transition. The club had just seen their seven-year reign as Ligue 1 champions come to an end and needed a new leader in attack following Karim Benzema’s departure to Real Madrid. Enter Lisandro López, a prolific striker from FC Porto, acquired for a then club-record €24 million.
From the outset, Lisandro’s intensity, technical ability, and finishing ability made him an instant fan favorite. His debut season saw him net 15 league goals and provide 5 assists, playing a crucial role as Lyon reached the UEFA Champions League semi-finals for the first time in their history. His relentless work ethic and clutch performances, including a brace against Real Madrid in the UCL last-16 tie, cemented his reputation as a big-game player.
Beyond statistics, López's leadership qualities became increasingly evident. With his warrior-like mentality, he quickly assumed the captain’s armband, replacing Cris in 2011. In total, he registered 59 goals in 119 Ligue 1 appearances, consistently delivering in decisive moments. One of his most memorable displays came in the 2012 Coupe de France final, where he scored the decisive goal in a 1-0 win over Quevilly, securing Lyon’s first domestic cup in four years. Despite his importance, financial constraints saw Lyon let go of López in 2013. He joined Al-Gharafa in Qatar, marking the end of his European adventure. He then went home to his native Argentina to play for his hometown side, Racing Club, before moving to Primera Division side Club Atlético Sarmiento in 2024.
Feliz cumpleaños, Lisandro Lopez!
