Two sides formerly managed by legendary French manager Arsene Wenger will face off in North London on Wednesday night as Monaco look to get back to winning ways in the Champions League against tough Premier League opposition in Arsenal. Only one place separates the two sides in the table at the moment, with events at the Emirates potentially decisive in deciding who will go above who at the end of the league phase.
Les Monégasques are hoping to bounce back from their 3-2 defeat to Benfica at the Stade Louis II, letting slip a 1-0 and then 2-1 lead slip before the Portuguese visitors completed a last-minute comeback.
The Austrian tactician has previous successful experience of facing Arsenal in European competition. Back in 2019 Hütter faced the Gunners with his former side Eintracht Frankfurt and delivered a shock 2-1 Europa League victory. A brace scored by Daichi Kamada led to the downfall of former PSG manager Unai Emery, paving the way for current coach Mikel Arteta to take over the reins of the club. The rest, as they all say, is history…
Hütter was wary of the Arsenal threat during his pre-match press conference, specifically their strength at set-pieces. "Our preparation for this match was more advanced than for a classic Ligue 1 match, that's for sure," said the Austrian. "They are very strong on set-pieces - it's a real weapon for them. That's obvious."
"They train a lot for that, but we have an idea of how we should defend in these phases. We can also be a threat to them in this area, because that's also something that's an area of strength for us."
The Principality side will have to work around a diminished defence for Wednesday's match-up with Arsenal, with Wilfred Singo serving a ban for a red card and Christian Mawissa also suspended for too many bookings. Mohamed Salisu and Thilo Kehrer will likely be reunited at the back. Les Monégasques have been further impacted by the absences of Krepin Diatta and Edan Diop, with Zakaria having missed his fair share of games recently. But they still have their core attackers, with Eliesse Ben Seghir hoping to score in back to back games in the Champions League with Monaco.
Likely Monaco lineup: Majecki; Vanderson, Salisu, Kehrer, Henrique; Zakaria, Camara; Akliouche, Ben Seghir, Golovin, Embolo.
