The Colombian has only made four appearances in Ligue 1 for Rennes after arriving this past summer from MLS side Real Salt Lake. Gómez's career began in Colombia as he's a product of Millonarios' youth system and eventually cracked the first team in 2021.
After becoming a mainstay for his boyhood club, the forward made 57 appearances across all competitions, scoring 12 goals and recording five assists. He also won the Copa Colombia, the country's domestic cup, during the 2021-22 season.
Following three years with Millonarios, Gómez went abroad to the United States to join Real Salt Lake in 2023. In MLS, the youngster made 65 appearances across all competitions, scoring 15 goals and recording 15 assists during his tenure there.
His MLS production caught Rennes' eye, causing them to push for the winger. Olivier Cloarec, the club's Executive President and CEO explained why the club decided to pull the trigger and bring Gómez to France.
"Carlos represents the future of the Colombian national team. He's a dynamic winger with great dribbling skills, and he will bring his talent to our attack. We are very pleased to have him join the squad."
Once Rennes officially made the transfer for the Quibdó native, Gómez became the third Colombian to play for the club, following in the footsteps of Victor Hugo Montaño and Juan Fernando Quintero.
Gómez didn't hide his excitement as he looked forward to continuing his upward career trajectory and helping Les Rouge et Noirs have a successful season.
"I'm obviously very happy; this is a significant step for me in a major league. I know I have to prove myself. My goal is to quickly contribute my skills to the team. I can't wait to meet my new teammates."
If Gómez begins to find success with Rennes, more call-ups to Colombia's national team could follow as the player already has two caps and with the 2026 FIFA World Cup right around the corner, his time with the Ligue 1 side will be crucial.
