Zuriko Davitashvili from Saint-Étienne shined bright on Matchday 7, scoring a hat-trick in a 3-1 victory against AJ Auxerre as he continues to make an impressive mark in his first season in France’s top flight.
After leaving Dinamo Batumi, Davitashvili came to France in 2022, joining Bordeaux on an initial loan deal. In a 2023 interview with So Foot, he explained the decision that led him to continue his career in France.
“Over the summer, I had some interest from Lorient. Their management reached out and expressed that they wanted me, but for reasons I still don’t understand, it didn’t work out. Then my agent, Mamuka Jugeli (who also represents Khvicha Kvaratskhelia), spoke to me about Bordeaux. He convinced me it would be a good move, and I already knew it was a solid club.”
The French side would make the deal permanent following the 2022-23 season and would make 71 appearances across all competitions while scoring 14 goals and registering 12 assists. In the same interview with So Foot, Davitashvili revealed what it was like going from the Georgian league to Ligue 2.
“The Georgian league is decent, but Ligue 2 is a step above because of the intensity and fast pace of the game. Every team is strong; you can’t just stroll in and expect to win 6-0 easily. Every match is tough until the final whistle. That’s the main difference from the Georgian league.”
After spending three years with Bordeaux, Davitashvili moved to Saint-Étienne this past summer. However, before he could play a single match for Les Verts, he was already making waves with Georgia’s national team during their impressive run at UEFA Euro 2024.
Georgia reached the Round of 16 and even won 2-0 over Portugal in the group stage. Once the surprising run ended against Spain, Davitashvili had to focus on his move to Saint-Étienne. In an interview with Poteaux-Carres.com, Georgia manager Willy Sagnol spoke about the type of player the forward is and whether he can become a beloved figure for supporters.
"He’s the kind of player who always gives his all and will continue to do so. While his performances may not always be outstanding, I truly believe the St. Etienne fans are going to appreciate his intensity and dedication…
"He definitely has all the qualities to be appreciated at Sainté. He’s proactive and has a great attitude. He clearly demonstrates his ability to work hard and give his all. For him, these qualities aren't just concepts; they’re part of his everyday life."
Davitashvili has made seven appearances for ASSE this season, scoring three goals and providing two assists. If he continues to perform like he did this past weekend, he could become one of the breakout stars of the campaign.
