It was a goal-scoring fest at the Allianz Riviera, but it was OGC Nice doing all the scoring with their 8-0 win over Saint-Étienne on Friday night as the club celebrated its 120th anniversary.
The opening goal came from Saint-Étienne's Dylan Batubinsika, who scored an own goal just four minutes in as it set the tone for a challenging match for Olivier Dall'Oglio and his team.
Nice scored three minutes later thanks to a goal from Tanguy Ndombele, giving the home side a 2-0 lead less than ten minutes into the match. The scoring took a break for a few minutes, and then it came in droves.
Mohamed-Ali Cho made it 3-0 after scoring in the 24th minute as Les Aiglons took a commanding lead over the visitors.
Franck Haise and his team continued their goal-scoring ways with Youssoufa Moukoko, who is on loan from Borussia Dortmund, finding the back of the net in the 26th minute to give Nice a 4-0 less than 30 minutes into the contest.
In the 36th minute, Evann Guessand added to the offensive onslaught as Nice had a 5-0 advantage over ASSE. The final goal in the first 45 minutes came from Moukoko, who scored in the 39th minute to record a first half brace.
The first 45 minutes from Nice were historical as they became the first team in the 21st century to score at least six goals in the first half of a Ligue 1 match.
Despite the six goals, Nice didn't have ten or more shots in the first half; they only recorded nine. In the second half, there weren't six goals, but the home side's goal-scoring didn't stop.
Sofiane Diop scored in the 74th minute to extend Nice's lead to 7-0 and while the goals slowed down, it wasn't the last goal scored in the match.
Following a VAR review, Le Gym received a penalty call, and it was Pablo Rosario who stepped into the box and converted the shot in the 86th minute to give Nice an 8-0 lead.
After the win, Nice captain Dante spoke to DAZN, reflecting on the team's historic performance.
"I don't think we could have given a better gift for the club's 120th anniversary. It was an incredible night. This is for all the people who work for and love the club. It was a standout performance, marked by the focus, discipline, and humility we kept throughout."
"Even being up 6-0 at halftime, we stayed committed to playing simple and effective football. Now, it's on us to keep that same mindset going forward."
Saint-Étienne will look to turn the page on this loss when they face FC Nantes on September 29. As for Nice, this game is a warm-up for their UEFA Europa League clash against Real Sociedad on Wednesday.
