As Rennes clinched a dominant win over Montpellier (3-0) this weekend, we take a look at how new Danish midfielder Albert Grønbæk has made a great start to life with the Breton side in Ligue 1.

Rennes' new recruit Albert Grønbæk has hit the ground running in Ligue 1 already just a few games into the 2024-2025 season. Scoring on his first start for the Breton club, Grønbæk helped his side earn a dominant win over Montpellier (3-0) on Sunday afternoon. At 22-years-old, he is a player that has caught the attention of Danish fans back home, but is also starting to turn heads in Ligue 1.

After playing for local Danish side Aarhus Gymnastikforening, Grønbæk signed for Norwegian side FK Bodø/Glimt in the summer of 2022. After limited game-time in his first season at the club, he would go onto become an integral part of the side's third league triumph in four seasons under manager Kjetil Knutsen. French newspaper L'Équipe chatted to Denmark's 1992 European Champion, John Sivebæk, who spoke highly of Rennes' new talent.

Sivebæk, who himself spent time in France with Saint-Étienne and Monaco, reflected on Grønbæk’s swift adjustment to Ligue 1. “Normally, it takes a bit of time, a few months, to adapt to a new country and a new league. There’s a change of language, culture, and style of play. But he already looks comfortable; he shows great strength of character,” said the former Danish international.

A versatile and intelligent midfielder

Grønbæk has been praised for his versatility, able to play in various midfield positions. Sivebæk emphasised his physical and technical qualities: “He’s a pretty complete player, but his main asset is his running ability. He’s got a huge engine, but he doesn’t just run aimlessly – he moves very well.”

Closely followed by Danish media, Grønbæk has also shone in his recent appearances for the national team. “At home, we talk a lot more about him now,” Sivebæk noted. “He’s signed for one of Europe’s top leagues and a very good club like Rennes. He’s been very good for the national team as well.”

Having showed plenty of promise in his opening four games as a Stade Rennais player, Grønbæk is nailed on to be one more exciting young players to watch in the league this season.
