Recap: Maupay, Henrique Extend OM’s Unbeaten Streak

Olympique de Marseille returned from the FIFA international break with an impressive 2-0 victory over OGC Nice on Saturday at Stade Vélodrome.

Roberto De Zerbi and his team entered this match on a three-game unbeaten streak, with two wins and one draw. OM also scored ten goals in this run, so they’ve come out of the gate in an outstanding fashion.

Nice have been the opposite as they had only won one match in their first three contests with one win, one draw, and one loss to start this 2024-25 Ligue 1 campaign.

Both teams recorded four total shots in the first half and the match nearly went into halftime scoreless, but Neal Maupay, who spent last season at Brentford, opened the scoring in the 40th minute on his OM debut. Rather than head into the dressing room tied, manager Franck Haise and his team had to regroup and find a goal to level the game.

In the second half, Les Aiglons recorded seven total shots as they looked to find the back of the net. As for Marseille, the home side had six total shots and it would be OM who scored again.

Luis Henrique is off to a great start this season under De Zerbi and he added the insurance goal in the 53rd minute with a spectacular strike. Despite having a two-goal advantage, Les Phocéens did face adversity as they went down to ten men after Derek Cornelius received a second yellow card, leading to a red card in the 74th minute.

Even though Nice had the extra man out on the pitch, they couldn’t crack OM’s defense as goalkeeper Gerónimo Rulli also had an impressive night, making four saves for the clean sheet.

The Haise era isn’t starting as Nice had hoped, but they’ll need to put this loss behind them as they’ll have a busy next few days.

Nice will host Saint-Étienne, who are coming off their first Ligue 1 win of the season, on Friday at Allianz Riviera. Then, on September 25, they’ll also host Real Sociedad on Matchday 1 of the UEFA Europa League’s league phase.

OM will travel to Groupama Stadium next weekend to face Olympique Lyonnais in hopes of extending their unbeaten streak to five games.

They’ll also be traveling with an informative attack as Marseille have scored twelve goals in the first four Ligue 1 matchdays, their best goal-scoring stretch to start the competition since the 1954-1955 season.
