Recap: Marseille and Reims play to thrilling draw

Olympique de Marseille and Stade de Reims played out an exciting 2-2 draw on Sunday night at Stade Vélodrome with both sides exchanging goals to cap off Matchday 2 in Ligue 1.

Marseille entered this contest having scored five goals in their Matchday 1 victory over Stade Brestois. Meanwhile, Reims eyed a bounce-back performance following a 2-0 home loss to LOSC Lille in their first match of the 2024-25 season.

OM attempted a second straight standout performance in the goal department against Reims, recording 11 shots in the first 45 minutes. Roberto De Zerbi and his team opened the scoring in this match thanks to a goal from Amine Harit in the 25th minute.

The home side went into halftime with a 1-0 advantage, but Reims didn't let the game escape from their hands despite being on the road. Coming out of halftime, Les Rouges et Blancs scored in the 51st minute to level the scoring courtesy of a goal from Sergio Akieme.

Reims didn't stop there as they shocked OM and the home supporters, scoring another goal four minutes later as 20-year-old Yaya Fofana scored to give Reims a 2-1 lead in his first start of the season.

After falling behind 1-0, Reims turned the situation with two goals in less than five minutes. Marseille responded in the 71st minute as Mason Greenwood scored in his second straight game to level the scoring 2-2.

Neither side would find the game-winning goal as both teams left this contest with one point each.

Marseille will attempt to return to the winning column next Sunday when they travel to Stadium de Toulouse to face Toulouse FC. Les Violets are coming off a 1-1 draw against OGC Nice and have opened up this new Ligue 1 season with a pair of draws.

As for Reims, they have yet to win this season and will aim to snap their two-game winless streak when they host Stade Rennais next Sunday at Stade Auguste-Delaune.
